Show I The Knocker g , The lenockor is soTiselcss nnU mean nnd provoking', And tries to encourage what others despise, And stands at tho corners a hooting and croaking; Like toads in a puddle that slaughter tho flies. If one has a project he sees would avail him, And bo of advantage to others as well, Ho girds on his armor at once to assail him; And tells him his purpose will never excel. Why didn'ts and why dont's ho uses profusely, And sees no good reasdn for this or for that, "Whilo his own private business is managed so loosely; That people can see he is-blind as a bat. O' would that such fellows had eyesight to seeing, That bodsting is hotter than knocking by far, And try to make richer tho world for being. Tho leaders of progress, instead of a bar. And use their best talents as nature intended, . To mako others happy and helpful whilo here, That when their brief stay in this world is ended; Tho wiso nnd tho .jut would their mem'ry revere. Tho knockers and kickers give, heed to your betters, And join tho procession of progress and fame, And shako from your stiff jointh your old galling fetter--, Or few will bo likely to cherish your name.
