A host of activities and 7:05-9:1- America is sometimes a strange place even for Americans. Coal leaders predict growth in 21st entering CHICAGO (AP) The United States will enter the 21st century fueled by a successful coal industry, said Ian K. MacGregor, chairman of the National Coal Board, United Kingdom. , MacGregor, who spoke Monday at the opening session of the American Mining Congress International Coal Show, predicted that nuclear energy would not come into its own until the end of the 21st century. He compared nuclear power to the hero of Gullivers Travels, tied down by tiny people and unable to function. The world energy mix makes it imperative for the U.S coal industry to increase productivity, said MacGregor, former chairman of the American Mining Congress and AMAX Inc. Developed countries have a human and moral obligation to aid developing societies with the energy, raw materials and technology they need to increase their production and create their own wealth, he said. MacGregor said the American industrial revolution of the late 19th century was fueled by a strong coal industry and predicted a similar revolution for the end of this century. And he cautioned against being stampeded into ways to reduce the effluents that result from coal burning. Deputy Secretary Danny J. Boggs of the U.S. i century Department of Energy stressed the Reagan administrations opposition to policies that would put a damper on economic recovery without any assurances that such measures will bring about the desired results. Demands for immediate acid rain controls, before more scientific information is available on its causes and effects, could have an adverse effect, on the administrations goal of providing' adequate energy at reasonable costs, Boggs" said. He called for increased coal exports to help solve the nations problem and urged coal producers to be innovative and aggressive in increasing the U.S. share of world markets. Ralph E. Bailey, chairman of the American Mining Congress, predicted an annual growth rate of 3 percent until the year 2000 and said coal would increase its present 18 percent share of the U.S. energy supply to 30 percent by the end of the century. I believe America is back, and coal is back, Bailey said. Our challenge, in this second chance, is to see that we stay on track. The show, which runs until May 3 at McCormick Place, features more than $1 billion worth of coal mining equipment. About 20,000 industry representatives are expected to attend.
