Show 6 RV Show, May 11,1983 tow lighter campers Little cars Travel light Saving energy camp close to home By JAMES C. BURKE Copley News Service If your youngsters are yearning to camp out under the stars, but gas shortages and accompanying high gas prices are dissuading you, try taking your recreational vehicle to a campsite close to home. Youll still be able to fish, hike, enjoy the scenery and commune with nature, even if you cant take a long to Yellowstone journey National Park. Here are some tips to help make excursion your memorable for its ease and hasslefree quality, if not for its historic destination. Spruce up your RV to make sub-compa- ct sure your home away from home truly affords you all the comforts you paid for when you purchased it. Before setting out, clean up your vehicle both outside and inside so that none of winters slush and grime mars the exterior beauty of your camper, and no dust or mildew makes the interior less than appealing to use. Remember that the fixtures in an RV may not be made the same as those youre accustomed to at home. The toilet bowl is probably plastic, not vitreous china, for example, and the windows are likely to be plastic. You can clean all washable surfaces now and do easy maintenance during your trip with glass, appliance and cabinet cleaner. Just spray it on bathroom fixtures, windows, range top and sides and the various metallic decorative trims and wipe dry with a paper towel or lint-fre- full-siz- sub-compa- ct ultralight RVs from Starcraft, the Venture, can be easily towed by most subcompact cars, yet offers Venture will sleep a family many comforts. By WILLIAM G. JACKSON Copley News Service Recreational vehicle parks that are truly outstanding become popular with RVers and, in turn, benefit by having advertising and repeat business. There are many good places to stay all over the land. There are more than a few that can be described as pit stops. Price and location are not the governing factors that make a stop good or bad it is a matter of the ownerss attitude, interest and ambition. Far too many camp managers are careless, indifferent and even slovenly about their property. Families can consider how quickly one of these RVs might pay for itself by eliminating motel and restaurant expenses on family vacations. If such costs have kept your family at home, try a k camper! It means the is tour summer possible again. But, better yet, once youve invested in a camper, you can make every weekend an outdoor vacation, too. two-wee- parks are not always up to par RV Travel light. Pack only the most necessary clothing to store in your luggage space or closet compartment. Extra weight cuts down your campers fuel efficiency and extra clothing on a camping trip is directly opposed to the thrust of your trip. Think positively and adopt will sleep a family of four and comes with a dinette table and two large utility cabinets. Its towing weight is 708 pounds, which leaves more than enough Be on lookout cloth. e Millions of Americans who have switched to cars are getting used to getting along with less; less space, less luxury, and certainly less gas. But one thing they no longer need to sacrifice is the fun of owning a recreational vehicle. Until recently, it required a e car to tow a medium or camper. No more! Some RV manufacturers have realized that big cars may be history and have trimmed their products to suit todays smaller tow vehicles. Campers, those RVs with folddown roofs, have always been the lightest of all RVs. Now the towing weights of some campers have been reduced to less than 1,000 pounds, easily hancars. dled by most Venture by Starcraft campers, one of the new ultralight RVs, offers more creature comforts than one might expect. For example, the lightest Venture unkempt grounds and unlevel spaces often will charge the same rate as a nearby shipshape operation. A park owner or operator should know when starting up that this is a people business and there are outlaw RVers whose carelessness, indifference and damage will have to be dealt with. If campsite sewer lines are not adequate to take a sudden surge from an RV holding tank this should be brought to the campers attention before not after there has dumping been a backup and overflow. Electrical outlets are another thing frequently hazardous and seldom standard. An RVer 637-313- 1 0 RENAULT American Motors may get the shock of a lifetime when hooking up or else need some oddball adapter which is not in the RV but back in some distant supply store. Or maybe and has been for the outlet is some time completely devoid of electricity. RVers will go along with any logical energysaving program but outlets with low voltage, low amperage or with neither just arent logical. Is it asking too much to have sewer, water and electric connections available for the newer side bath units? Just how many feet of sewer hose, water hose and electric cord does the average RV carry? Too often it is not enough. Unlevel spaces require RVers to carry enough boards, and on one blocks to build a bridge side of the RV, that is. Has in-- r Ration pushed the price of a wheelbarrow of gravel out of sight or are some operators too lazy to shovel a little into the low spots? Or are these spots kept low because if they were raised a little the RVs would hit the low hanging tree branches? There are enough bumps on the highways without being greeted by a mound of blacktop at the entrance to an RV park then and periodically throughout the access roads. More damage is done to RV cargo entering and leaving parks than on a days drive over rough highways. The excuse for is they slow these vehicles down. Actually, they break RVs up. Most RVs couldnt peel out if they had to. Does anyone know why some camps have such an aversion to good lighting throughout the park? A little less neon at the entrance and a little more candlepower down by the campsites would make a much more inviting spot when seen ..from the road. Or is it more picturesque having campers do imitations of fireflies as they flashlight their way to the evening shower? While RVers may find none, one, or all of these deficiencies at a park, they might stay once but never again. i spine-buste- rs the good guys may holes worn in their . welcome mats.
