'Conan ' leaves dreams intact for book-read- NOW! er ! i v i ; , I dread seeing a movie based on a book I have read and enjoyed. Often the images painted by my minds eye of the characters and places in a favorite novel are so much different from those por-r- .. trayed on the screen that I leave the theater disappointed, with another fantasy in ruins. My fear of seeing Conan the Barbarian was even greater than usual, as I have been a Conan-- ; since the day I first phile discovered fantasy writer Robert E. Howards giant warrior in a dusty old book found at a garage sale. I have followed the tales of the wild Cimmerian from the day he was born to his crowning as king of Aqulonia, and have spent many hours in the imaginary world that was Conans. A true fan, I have collected copies of every Conan story, from his first appearance in a 1937 copy of Weird Tales magazine, to a final draft of the script written for the film. It was with a great deal of trepidation that I went to see the movie. I was not disappointed. There were flaws, though they were probably only noticeable to someone who knows Conan well. Time was condensed and some happenings added, but only to make the film more manageable. The spirit, strength and dark humor of the barbarian king, first described so vividly by Howards pen, is brought to life in the film. The casting of bodybuilder Arnold Schwartzenegger as Conan was a master stroke. Three times named Mr. Universe, the Austrian-bor- n the part. James Earl Jones plays Thulsa Doom, Conans arch enemy, while newcomer Sandhal Bergman, as the mighty warriors companion and lover, brings a bigger-than-li- fe presence to the screen. R The film deserves its of deal a it contains great rating; violence, and some sex. But the movie makes no excuse for its excesses. It takes place in a violent time filled with dangers, when a man lived by his sword, and died for honor. The scenes of love and death have their place. Conan the Barbarian is a swashbuckling, action-packe- d adventure film in the same vein as Star Wars, or Raiders of the Lost Ark. Unlike a number of films made from novels, Conan makes the journey well from printed page to the big screen. This time I left the theater with my dreams intact. Physical Science Department Space Scholarship to Southern Utah State College. John Jay Whipple, son of Frank and the late Pauline Whipple, Price, is one of two high school seniors selected by the SUSC School of Science to participate in the Getaway Special. The scholarship is for the 1982-8- 3 school year. Paul Lamb, a senior at Logan High School, is the recipient of the second scholarship which has been awarded by the SUSC Department of Life Science. SUSCs Getaway Special was made possible by R. Gilbert Moore, special projects manager for Thiokol Corporations Space Booster Program.
