Price WELLINGTON Over 100 LDS members from Wellington and Price stakes were on hand for the dedication of Med Norton field here on Sunday afternoon. The dedication of the field, located in east Wellington adjacent to the A1 Barnes field, culminated over four months of work by church and community members. e The piece of land for the two fields was donated to the church in 1962 by A1 Barnes. The Al Barnes field was built shortly after the donation in 1962. Med Norton, who died last fall at the age of 16 when he was struck by lightning, was the reason the field was built. His father, Carl Norton, spearheaded the movement to build the much needed playing grounds. That kid was my whole life, Norton said. It was the least I could do to build the field. Norton said 150 volunteers participated in laying the sod for the field. People from as far away as Emery County pitched in their help. Norton himself worked 12 hours a day throughout the four month project. A good share of the money used six-acr- pts. Richard Colombo and Tracey West were the leading hitters for the losers. Mutual put all six runs on the scoreboard in the first three innings in dropping Central Commission. Baughman had a second inning home run when the victors tallied four times. Central Commission rallied for four runs in the last two innings, but could not quite catch up. Commercial Security had some heavy hitting from Colombo, who went three for three, including a triple, to slip by Helper Merc in Saturdays nightcap and take over sole possession of first place. Tom Byrge and Tracey West divided the pitching, giving up three hits in the game, one a double by Lance Greener. to construct the project came from the savings Norton had saved for Meds mission and As long as Im alive Ill keep the field in good shape, he said. Med was one of the top baseball players in the area having pitched in the Little League World Series in Idaho Falls three years ago. As part of the project, Norton and his volunteer crew also y clubhouse erected a building for concessions and announcing purposes. The field is complete with an underground sprinkler system and new cyclone fencing. President Charles Bradshaw gave the dedicatory prayer saying that participating and having fun is the main function of the field. BradWinning is secondary, shaw said. President Earl D. Gunderson welcomed the guests and the quartet of Jim Norton, Doug Litster, Mike Bradshaw and Clyde Davis played two songs commending the work that went into the field. Charles Acklin gave the invocation and Robert Branch presented the benediction. two-stor- golf notes Swilor 4th in Provo Open Former U.S. Open champion Billy Casper staved off challenges from several Utah golfers, including Carbon Country Club pro Milan Swilor, to win the Provo Open at Timpanogos Golf Course.
