This fall, Marlane Critchlow, is one of the instructors who will be teaching cake decorating to area residents. She became interested in cake decorating by watching a neighbor make and sell wedding cakes. I used to sit fascinated, and watch my neighbor decorate wedding cakes, she said. I really didnt think that I could learn to do it. Gradually, I began to try one or two of her techniques and I discovered that it wasnt really that hard to do. The hardest thing to learn in cake decorating is pressure control and that just takes practice. Eventually, Marlane took a class and after much practice was able to market her skills to a local bakery. When I was first learning to do cake decorating, I would frost the back of a cake pan. I would then scrape off the frosting and practice another design. Naturally, I was slow in the beginning but after working in the bakery, I found I could completely decorate a cake in about 10 minutes.
