Show FORT HALL OPENING POSTPONED A YEAR OPENING OF reservation surrounding POCATELLO DELAYED BY PROTEST objection to allotments to indian on the grounds that they were oetting land than they were entitled to in order for a new allotment which will increate the land given them by 16 pel cent caldwell indian agent of the fort hall reservation was notified tuesday of a dec s on reached by the interior depart nent wh b makes nee essary another allotment of indian lands on that le and will postpone the opening of the ceded lands for nearly a year the allotment was made under an old law which gave each member oi an ind an family eighty in cases where such families had located on ceded lands pr or to cessation and de sired to remain cald veil s allot ments covered about seven thousand acres many land owners in and around pocatello protested against such allotment on the ground that it would give to the bannocks and isho more land than they were entitled to and senator dubois filed a protest with the indian office at the request of pocatello residents the secretary of the inter or ruled that the allotments must be made again under the terms of the fort badger treaty wh ch gives acres to every man and wife in the tribes who may have made a 1 ome on the ceded lands the net result of this hew order will be to allot about 8 acres to the indians or 1 kofl acres in excess of the total bumbel of acres embraced in the original allot agent caldwell says 1 e shall not be g n the new work until the enow leaves the ground in tl e spring and that it may take from th arty to s aty days in comment ng on the new order agent caldwell said that the pocatello protestants have stood in the r own light will proceed with the new allotment at the earliest practicable day |
