Of the eight intermountain state colleges participating, the CEU contingency accumu- lated the highest number of speaker points, beating out its closest competitor by more than 30 points. A superior performance in junior debate led the attack. After five preliminary rounds, four of the eight teams to reach the quarter finals were from CEU. Three of the teams, Mac Webster (Price) and Joe Carver (Santa Rosa, Calif.); Jennifer DeRose (Riverton) and Paige Petersen (Price); and Amy Pelo and Karen McGee (both Orem), eventually tied for first place in the event. Five of our , other debate teams had records that would have qualified them for the final rounds under normal circumstances, but couldnt reach the finals because our top teams dominated the event and raised the qualification leveL" CEU squad members also dominated several individual events, shutting out their competition in one category and nearly doing the same in two other events. Carver, Webster and McGee took first, second and third place honors respectively in extemporaneous speaking. Bill Bryner (Price) captured the first place trophy in impromptu, followed by Carver in second and Webster at fourth. Carver also led CEUs team in informative speaking with a second place win, followed by Pelo in third and Davis with a fifth place finish. CEU left the tournament with 23 trophies and nine other awards. The next stop for CEU forensics is Santa Rosa, Calif., where Warren believes his teams true talents will be put to the test. Competition on the West Coast is on a different level The pace is faster and the attitudes are different than at tournaments in the Intermountain Region. I know our team this year has the diversity to adapt to that environment and turn in another exceptional performance."
