Thats where senior Gus Childs has gotten his minutes at quarterback. Childs stepped into the JV starting role early in the season and looked impress- ive in leading Emery to a winning record. He has a good arm, is intelligent and should be a team leader, the coach said. The starting positions in the Emery backfield are wide open. A half dozen underclassmen are in the running, but none has much varsity experience. Junior Jon Skipps played in a few varsity games, but he did have a solid junior varsity season. Mike Gagon, Shane Bogdin, Curt Bowden and Reman Jacobsen, all juniors, are also vying for backfield positions. Seniors Shawn Borba, Adam Arrington and junior Ryan Burke give Emery some good wheels at wide receiver, and in the Emery offensive philosophy, they will be called on to do a lot in the Spartan attack. Linemen expected to fill both offensive and defensive positions for Emery include Jeremy West, Nash Baltzer, Mike Cole, Travis Coyne, Ray Randall, Tom Adams and Jerry Copatch. Only Cole has varsity experience, so one of the keys to the success of Emery will be how well these and other linemen progress. In addition to having just one starter back, Emery faces a difficult schedule with just three home games. Emery opens with Beaver, a 2A school, on Aug. 24. Then things get a little more |
