Those hopes, to a great extent, rest on 66 senior Jared Butler, who saw limited varsity time last season but who led the junior varsity in scoring with over 20 points per outing. Hes got to do the job for us inside," coach Jeffs has said of Butler. Hes the one guy on our team wholl have to carry the offensive load." Other seniors likely to be in the lineup are Mike Cole, Jason Huntington and Gus Childs. Cole is a tough inside player at 64" while Huntington, although a big man, is a good outside shooter. Childs could be the start- ing Emery point guard, quarterbacking the team. He has solid ball-handli- skills and has shown flashes of shooting talent. Players off the junior varsity and sophomore teams will have to fill in the other positions. On Nov. 30, the team will play at Spanish Fork against a team which they beat by 40 points last season at Emery. However, the Dons had several young players who will have a year of experience behind them in 1990. Staying in Utah Valley, the next game will be at Payson on Dec. 1. Cook is a good offensive player and an excellent defensive player. This year he will alternate between the forward position and center. Rod Jewkes returns. He plays small forward or big forward. The players attended the Utah Valley Community College basketball camp as a team, but their success will be determined by their ability to work together as a unit. Region 8 will be a tough basketball region this year. Uintah will be very good, and Wasatch returns two starting guards. Emery should also field an excellent team, even with the loss of Shawn Bradley. |
