For Carbon, it was 3 2-- 0 night when everything and by with the Spartans on top by a 29-- 7 score, it was apparent that this just was not their night. The Dinos, receiving the opening kickoff after Emery opted to play defense after a seemed to go wrong half-tim- e, winning the coin flip, surprised everyone by staying on the ground during the opening series of downs rather than have Roger Cook throw at the outset. The rushing game, with Don Ross and Mike Dennis doing most of the lugging, carried the Dinos to the Spartan line. At that point, Cook attempted his first pass and was sacked, an omen of things to come. The Dinos then punted to the Emery 15, and Spartan quarterback Ryan Stilson had a few surprises of his own for the Dinos. A quick pass moved the Spartans to their own 45. Stilson then stunned the Dinos with a screen pass to Cody Allred. The Allred took the pass a few yards over the 37-ya- rd fleet-foote- d line of scrimmage and rambled straight up the middle for 55 yards and the first touchdown of the game. Stilson carried in for a conversion after the Dinos were penalized and Emery had a quick lead. Carbon bounced right back with a TD of their own after a short kickoff by the Spartans gave them possession at their own 35. Cook immediately found his targets, a pass to his brother, Curtis, gave the 8-- 0 came up with n spectacular catch at the Emery 14, and Derek Lowe made it first and goal for the Dinos at the line. Carbon could not move the ball after receiving the kickoff, Cook being rused unmercifully by the strong Emery defensive line on three successive incompletions. A Dino punt to the Emery 29 only set up another scoring drive by the Spartans. Moving 71 yards, largely on an effective passing game by Stilson, the Spartans were soon down on the Dino line, where Jeff ran it in. Childs made it 22-with another successful 45-yar- Guy-mo- rd n 7 PAT. Lowe moved the Dinos out to near midfield with a good run after the kickoff, but Cook was sacked again by the aggressive Spartans all the way back to the 30, forcing the Dinos to punt the ball away. Starting from their own 20, Stilson found a receiver for a first down at the 35 and on the next play lofted a pass to Steven Gordon along the sidelines. Gordon eluded would-b- e Dino tacklers in a tightrope gallop to the end zone. Another successful placement by Childs gave Emery the 29-halftime lead and all but put the game out of reach for the 7 Dinos. Shortly after the intermission, Stilson went to work again with his effective pass- ing game after Carbon the Spartans to score again. Stilson hit, tight end Jared Butler for an Emery first down at the Dino 11 and seconds later, from the fine, found Allred all alone in rd the end zone for another scoring strike. Childs made it 36-- 7 with seconds remaining in the third period. The Spartans increased the margin to 42-- 7 halfway through the final period as Stilson continued to riddle the Dino defensive backfield. The TD came on a aerial to Chris Wilson. Carbons pass defense against Stilson left much to be desired, to put it 45-ya- rd mildly. Carbon managed to save some face in the struggle by scoring late in the game. Cook found De Jones for one of the few times during the night on a long pass into Spartan territory. Lowe made a fine run to the 20 for a first down, and the Dino TD came on a Cook to Cook pass that was good for the last 14 yards. A conversion attempt failed for the final score of 42-1Emery piled up over 500 yards offensively in the game, the bulk of them coming on a tremendous performance by 3. Stilson. The Spartan quarterback completed 19 of 28 passes for a total of 415 yards and four touchdowns. Emery completely controlled the line play, giving Stilson all the time he needed to find his receivers. Not enough credit can be given the Spartan defensive line, which harassed Cook all night. Cook was held to less than 200 yards passing forthe first time this year. Carbon now looks forward to a regrouping for a home game Friday against the Lehi Pioneers. Emery faces an important test against the tough Wasatch Wasps, a game in which a victory would almost assure the Spartans the region title in their first year of Class competition. 3-- A Prep Football Standings Dogion Seven gambled on a fourth down situation on their own 30.
