Two candidates were selected from within By ARVA SMITH Staff writer the district, assistant superintendents Hanson and James Lee Jensen, and they were interviewed by the board during an executive session. Eugene Crocco, who is in charge of special programs for the district, declined becoming a candidate. In a continuation of the regular meeting, following the executive session, board member Walter Borla made a motion seconded by Shirley Guymon that Hanson be named superintendent. The vote was Borla, Guymon and Asa Draper voted for the motion while Robinson and Denison voted against. Before the vote was taken, there was some discussion to delay the vote until another meeting. Board member Don Denison presented a motion to go ahead and the motion was seconded by Shirley Guymon. Borla voted against the motion to take an immediate Dr. Robert N. Hanson, assistant superintendent Carbon County Schools, Thursday was named superintendent during the regular board meeting. Hanson will succeed Dr. Ell B. Sorenson, who resigned to accept a position as superintendent of schools in Palmer, Alaska. (See related story page 1A) At the same meeting, Fern Wilkerson, principal at Petersen Elementary was named principal of Durrant. She will succeed the late Gary Arnold. The opening at Petersen Elementary will be advertised across the district. For the appointment of a new superintendent, Richard Robinson, school board president, said the board had three options: (1) to appoint someone from within the Carbon County School system, (2) to advertise the opening within the district or (3) to advertise nationally. 3-- 2. vote. New superintendent of schools Dr. Robert N. Hanson has taught on every level from elementary grades to college and has served as an administrator in the Carbon County School District since 1970. As one of the two assistant superintendents, he has had responsibility for supervising elementary instruction, special education, research, testing, youth in custody and federal programs. A native of Nephi, Dr. Hanson graduated from Juab I Iigh School and attended Snow College for five quarters before transferring to Brigham Young University. After graduating from BYU with a bachelors degree in elementary educaiion and minors in English and mathematics he began his teaching career in the Ogden schools.
