The St. Patricks Day parade had the usual collection of floats, bands and politicians. This was the Price City Council entry . The Rep. Nielson promises another wilderness bill By ARVA SMITH Staff writer Rep. Howard Nielson said Monday in Price he is preparing a wilderness bill to introduce in Congress when bills introduced by Reps. Wayne Owens and Jim Hansen come up for discussion. His will call for less wilderness. He said he hopes to have his bill ready by May, although some people do not believe Congress will be prepared to act quickly on the wilderness plans. Nielson said Tiis proposal will be probably be for about 700,000 acres, compared to the 1.4 million acres asked for by Hansen and the 5.1 million proposed by Owens. Nielson came to Price Monday to hear about specific concerns and needs of this area from county commissioners and other local government representatives. They met in the offices of the Southeastern Utah Association of Governments. I think we should try to find a way to protect some areas while allowing development and some income, Nielson said. I think there is a way to find alternatives. Several of those at the meeting said neither Hansen nor Owens have met with people from the Third District to find out how their wilderness proposals would affect them. Also mentioned was the fact that more of the lands proposed for wilderness are in the Third District than in the districts represented by the other two congressmen. A comment was made that there, instead of taking it one step at a time. Wayne Owens said he one purpose of the wilderness bills was to stir up interest and discussion with some factfinding to come later. Hansen and Owens have said they will She also said she wants to cooperate with Emery County because what is good for Emery County is also good for Carbon County. Previous Carbon County representatives have taken the position that the Desolation Canyon area is too rugged to allow much development. Future impacts of wilderness designation for specific areas were discussed by Kuykendall; Emery County Commissioners Clyde Thompson, Duane Collard and Jerry Howell said. The various wilderness proposals for BLM lands that bave been studied would take from 7 to 9 percent of Carbon County and from 14 to a little over 15 percent of Emery County. Carbon County Commissioner Emma Kuykendall said she favors designation of wilmile derness for all along the west side of the Green River, which would allow for coal and gas development on some lands further away from the river. This is similar to what Emery County said. Bill Howell, executive director, Southeastern Utah Association of Governments, said, I think people are being led down the primrose path of wilderness designation one step at a time. The proposals of Owens and Hansen are for Bureau of Land Management wilder- one-quart- designations. The Forest Service has 802,639 acres designated as wilderness; the national parks have 1,264,431 acres of potential wilderness; the state of Utah has 56,500 acres; and there are 413,000 acres of Indian lands managed as WERE FIGHTING FOR YOURUFE EVENING & WEEKEND APPTS.
