Programs for elementary grade younsters flourish in both counties, all on a volunteer basis from adults interested in the sports activities for the younger set. The Carbon youth football league is right now in the process of registering fifth, sixth and seventh grade students for the upcoming football season. Teams are being organized in Price, Helper and East T hosted Altamont Carbon and the games will be taking place in early September at the high school fields and at Helper Junior High. Basketball is not conducted on a county-wid- e basis, but each community or school has programs to introduce the youngsters to the court sport. Activity in this aspect is probably much more widespread in Emery County than in Carbon, where Ferron, Castle Dale, Huntington and Orangeville all have youth basketball loops in each community under volunteer help. Helper has had a youth Sports oriented Carbon and Emery counties do not confine all athletic activity to schools tournaments. American Legion baseball in Helper, an activity dating back to the 1930s, is as popular as ever. Under the guidance of Elvin (Fudd) Juliano and John Gianini for the past dozen or more years, it is unusual for the local team to fail qualifying for the state tournament. This past summer was one of the few years this did not come to pass the local team just missing the state meet by losing one too many games in league play. The Helper team competes in the Utah Valley league, meeting stiff competition every year from teams representing Provo, Orem, (American Fork, Lehi and Pleasant Grove) and occasionally Spanish Fork and Payson. Helper teams through the years won the state championship in 1940, 1941 and 1943. The team finished third twice in recent years in what has developed into some very Tri-Citi- es tough competition in the statewide activity. The concluding state tournament is always centered in Murray at Ken Price Park with Derks Field or Southridge Park in Kearns as the auxiliary fields to stage the tournament, one of the largest of American Legion activity in the whole country. 16-te- |
