Phone toll free: Planned forest burn causes concern By LARRY W. DAVIS Progress editor The planned burning of an area in the Ferron Ranger District of the Manti-LaSNational Forest has become a for concern with this coupon 9887 by some Emery County residents. The Ferron District has planned a controlled burn of approximately 900 acres in the Wrigley Hill area of the forest, and Forest Service officials recently posted signs in the area indicating that the bum is forthcoming. Since the posting of these signs, several inquiries have been made regarding the project. Ferron District forester Bill Dye said last week that the project has been in the works for some time and that proper notification has been made by the district. He said that the purpose of the bum is to help rejuvenate the area with grasses which are disappearing due to a conifer invasion and the disappearance of aspen groves. Dye said that grass flourishes in areas of aspen stands, but many of the aspen stands in the forest have been overrun by conifers which inhibit the growth of grasses. The Forest Service plans to use the bum as a management tool to help bring the grasses back which will then help grazing in the area. Dye said that the area planned for the bum has natural fire boundaries in all areas except for one which will necessitate the construction of a fireline.
