The Guard runners were among over 11,000 runners participating in the race. This was the third year in a row the National Guard sent its running team to compete with some of the best runners in the military, as well as thousands of civilian runners. The Army and Air National Guard runners came from across the country, with team members from as far away as Hawaii and Puerto Rico. The of team competed in the marathons military team division, against marathoners representing all branches of service, both active and reserve components. The National Guard marathon THE CARBON COUNTY COMMISSIONERS team was determined last May in Lincoln, Neb., where nearly 500 Army and Air Guard runners from across the nation ran the annual Lincoln Marathon. The top National Guard finishers became the team which represented the National Guard in the Marine Corps Marathon. Brad Ingram of Mansfield, Ohio was the overall winner in 2:23:13, while Kathy Champagne, Plattsburgh, N.Y., was the first woman to finish the race. Her time was 2:42:13. Jonas had an unofficial time of 2:53:55. Jonas, a staff sergeant in the Army National Guard, has 10 years of military service. He is a squad leader with the 1457th Engineer Battalion. In civilian life, Jonas is a laboratory technician for Utah Power and Light in Castle Dale. Jonas, 42, began training for marathons in 1984. His best marathon time is 2:48:50 run last year. The Marine Corps Marathon is billed as the peoples race because it accepts any runner, without regard to qualifying time and because race organizers do not pay elite runners to participate unlike nearly all other major marathons. The first Marine Corps Marathon in 1976 attracted nearly 1,200 runners. Now the official field is limited to 12,000 runners. The peoples race is also known as the marathon of the monuments because the 26.2 mile course passes some of the countrys most famous monuments. Landmarks on the course include the Washington the Lincoln Monument, Memorial, the Capitol Building, the Jefferson Monument and many other historic sites.
