Show 2B Sun Advocate, Price, Utah Wednesday, February 5, 1986 Vikings downed sun sports spots by Longhorns by Walt Borla More on Helper Auditorium A deal great of misun- and misconderstanding ceptions have evolved around the recreational basketball program at the Helper civic auditorium gym during the past two years. Having been involved in the program for many more years than I care to remember, I can understand the concerns of the group representing the basketball league who attended a city council meeting some two weeks ago. The auditorium roof has been leaking and finally a repair job now in process promises to correct this. The gym floor itself is worn to a glaze and is acutally dangerous to play on as the players will attest. The showers are inoperative and the adjoining dressing room has been converted into an office for the building custodian. The lockers, formerly in the dressing room, have been sold. The gym floor has not been reconditioned for years; local churches and recreational basketball at the junior high on Saturdays in the school district leisure and recreation program. This is fine, the Saturday program undoubtedly is a fine supplement to what we have had at the auditorium since it schools have theirs done every year or two. A gymnasium with shower facilities and a dressing room can be compared to a house without a bathroom. Present plans call for the gym floor to be reconditioned this coming August. The directors of the recreation program are not managers of the Helper mens league. They are employees of the city, have keys to the building, are responsible for the city equipment in the building and responsible for what goes on in the gym. It is they who must answer to the custodian for any vandalism, security or damage problems. They do not referee games in the mens league; city funds have never gone to pay for referees in the program; and the players do their own was built in 1938. Even though their pay has been reduced, the city directors continue to make the auditorium gym available to the youngsters in the community who are interested in coming in at 6 p.m. and just practice shooting baskets if nothing else. There is not and never has been a participation fee charged the youngsters for this privilege. Through the years, the mens league has actually been a small part of the city refereeing. The directors this year were asked and agreed to take a cut in pay on the premise that grade school and junior high school students now get their recreational program at the gym. Youngsters from the age of 5 or 6 on up through high school flocked to the gym each week to participate. Grade school leagues, junior high school age leagues, girls teams, all took part; the mens program never consisted of more than nine hours a week. After a good first quarter, the East Carbon Vikings found themselves moving further behind the Longhorns from Altamont Friday night. The Altamont hoopsters took command in the second and third quarters and stretched out a lead that would end up to be a 74-win. We had a good first and fourth quarter, but the second and third really saw them take off, according to Viking coach Boyd Millet. Off shooting is what led to the Viking loss, hitting only 19 field goals of 58 attempted, Millet said. The Vikings were only down by four at the end of the first quarter, but found themselves down 4 at the end of the first half. 49 The basketball players in the mens league cannot be categorized as overly demanding during all these years. The electric scoreboard in the gym and the glass backboards were purchased by the basketball association installed and under the direction of Pete Bottino when he was a city employee. On several occasions the players took the time to the lines on the court. The city has always provided the basketballs, nets for hoops and shirts for referees. Team jerseys are provided by sponsors. re-pai- nt 36-2- Grove. Now preparing for the region tournament, however, coach Robert Cox said if Ids team mission. The Longhorn defense was effective in shutting down Viking Don Herrera who has led in the scoring totals all season. Millet added that freshman Ben Bean was included in the scoring for the varsity. Millet is hoping that Bean will grow into a strong player for the team. Padilla led the Vikings in the rebound department with nine. The Vikings will be on the road to Duchesne Thursday for the second game between the two teams this season.
