Show r T Thursday, Oct. THE GREEN SHEET 10B tt r TT 27, 1988 THE ARTS Review: Sequel Script Lacks Excitement If Dickens Drood Due Friday LAKE. The Mystery of Edwin Drood will open tomorrow (Friday) at City Reps Utah Theatre and run through Nov. 19. Tony-awar- d The winning musical is based on Charles last and unfinished Dickens novel, adapted for the stage by Rupert Holmes. Jansen Davis is directing the play, a reprise of one of City Reps popular productions SALT that played last year at the companys Second Stage in ZCMI Center. Many of the same cast members will be seen, although some of the roles have been switched. "We are working hard to make tliis production suitably melodramatic, musical and above all enjoyable. The cast is excellent, a good mix of sinister, comedic and musical talent, said the director. The features the various members of the as they "Music Hall Royale involve the audience in their on and off stage antics and try to garner favor with audience members for votes as "murderer." The show has as many endings as and the audience will decide each night which ending they will see by their choice of the villain. Playing the "chairman" of the group will be Duane V. Stephens whose role involves keeping the English acting group under control, serving as narrator and also playing the part of Mayor Sapsea of Cloisterham, the setting for the play. At various times during the production he breaks character as Mayor Sapsea to remind the audience that something just said could be an important clue to the there are characters conclusion. The title traditionally role, played in English music hall style by a female, will be taken by Jennifer OHaley who also played the unfortunate vanished victim last year. Jennifer Kendall will play Miss Rosa Bud, the ingenue and obsession of the dual personality choirmaster John Jasper, played by Cliff Cole. The Opium Queen, Princess Puffer will be played by Linda K. Skoy and Helena and Neville Landless, the exotic emigrants from Ceylon will be played by Steven Patrick Sater and Laurie Bean. R. Troy Lunt will play the kindly Reverend Crisparkle. With the exception of Miss Kendall, all the cast members have participated in starring roles or the ensemble in other City Rep productions. Produced by the New York Shakespeare Festival in 1986, Drood won five Tony awards including best musical, best book and best score of the year as well as the Drama Desk award for best by Olga Milius Green Sheet Theater Critic MURRAY. In spite of a terrific effort by the cast, Star Child, now playing at the Old Nauvoo Playhouse doesnt make the grade as a sequel to the Saturdays Warrior. home While the latter sends-yohumming, Star Child lacks the memorable songs and verve that catch an audiences attention. Perhaps its the script thats at fault, seeming never to quite decide if its a farce or a drama. This is a show that would be more at home on an LDS ward stage, where it would ensure an than in a audience LDS theater setting. There community is an abundance of "in" jokes that would leave a patron completely at sea, and even Mormons who are not familiar with certain BYU facts and myths may find themselves at a loss. The further adventures of Saturdays Warrior missionaries, ever-popul- non-LD- S Wally Kestler and Harold Greene, now students at BYU, focuses almost completely on the schools reputation as a "dating and marriage" facility. Kestler arrives with a long (very long) list of the attributes he expects to find in his future wife. The girls seem to have no idea in their heads beyond finding a husband and there is absolutely no mention of any form of education other than catching your mangirl. or Whether in the earth life, these characters have that as their only purpose. Its to who be hoped any wander in to see the show dont think this really is what the gospel is all about. In. all this, there are a couple of standout performances by Jason Bowcutt and Rebecca Fullsom, and the entire cast did its best with the frequent changes between farce and serious conflict, and managed to leave the audience with a lump in their throats at the very dramatic ending. Miss Fulsom plays the role of Mitzi, the "loser" who thinks she has no chance at all of ever finding a man, and Bowcutt in a reprise of his role as Harold Greene brings a surprising depth to the character. The in which they meet is a winner, well staged, directed and acted and they won the sympathy of the audience and show. kept it throughout the too quickly little a "mellow" they and completely, that is attributed (in song) to "Love." Curtis Grow and Christopher Berg turned in good performances as Chuck and Larry and Bart Hickenlooper again brought to life the egotistical Kestler. McKell Steffenson gave a good performance as Marie supported ably by Tatia Baum as Betty Lou. Nolana Lord again appeared as the Matron; Amy Shumway and Shane Hoisington as the children, Michael and Sarah. A very able chorus included Kathryn Smith, Lalani Warr, C.W. Lord, Chris Whisenant, Steve Thaller , and Mike Devereaux. Star Child will continue to play with Saturdays alternately Warrior at the Mt. Vernon for dates Academy.
