Show 5B Thursday, Oct. THE GREEN SHEET 27, 1988 SCHOOLS St. Francis Students Observe Red Ribbon Week Brownie Troop Honored With Special Flag Taylorsville Musical -i A Truly Enchanted Evening J -- k Wonderful Guy" was delightful and "Dames" was a big hit with the audience. A strong cast received enthusiastic applause which was very well deserved. . Jason Hughes stole the show in his role of Emile de Becque. His voice and acting were both! superlative. His youth did not once detract from the role of the middle-age- d planter and his solos, "Some Enchanted Evening" and "This Nearly Was Mine" were show stoppers. This young man has a- rare talent and knows how to use it. Natalie Martinez gave us a charming andj believable Ensign Nellie Forbush and Jennifer Brown an outstanding Bloody Mary. Andy Graft, as Luther Billis brought the housed down with his antics. Nels Holmgren brought life by Olga Milius Green Sheet Theater Critic TAYLORSVILLE. It was truly an enchanted evening for patrons attending the opening night performance of Taylorsville highs South Pacific Friday. Take one of the most popular musicals, ever written, add a sensational set, a strong cast and firm direction and youve got a hit. The magic began on entering the auditorium, with a stunning set and lighting showing the island basking in the moonlight. The orchestra wore sailor caps and their conductor a captains hat and palm trees and flowers completed the Bali l Hai mood. Green Sheet ReuieiJ Russell Johnsons deft direction was evident throughout and he and his staff pulled out all the stops. Joyce Rawsons sets left nothing to be desired. Every scene, from the Company Street with its Nissen huts, jeep and battleship, to the de Becque terrace and the island was beautifully done. A big hand to Ms. Rawson for her designs and to master carpenter Norman Wendel and all who assisted them in building and painting those sets. Gary Jensen directed the excellent orchestra with no let down of tempo as sometimes happens at high school productions. Helen Hances costumes were colorful and appropriate and lighting and sound kept the mood throughout, under the direction of technical director Dave 1 J McOmie. Choreography by Robbin C. Jones was lively and fun, although the girls scenes were somewhat crowded. The waltz to "Im In Love With A capital. Steve Schmid, although a little weak vocally, gave a good acting performance as Lt. Cable and is to be commended for a great job in handling . makeup for the production. Taylorsville seems to produce masculine talent Jt to an extraordinary degree with strong leads and good backup by the mens chorus. Mr. Wendel is the choral director. Highlights included Bloody Marys "Bali Hai," and Nellies "Im Gonna Wash That Man Right Out Of My Hair," with real water and shampoo adding realism to the scene. And Martinez and Graft brought the house down with their lively "Honey Bun. All in all, "Some Enchanted Evening" was an appropriate theme for the entire production.
