USU Names Summer Honor Students McGruff Trucks Join Safety Effort WEST VALLEY. Making neighborhoods safer for children is the goal of a new crime prevention program which is being implemented this month by Mountain Fuel Supply Company in cooperation with the Utah Council for Crime Prevention local and law (UCCP) enforcement officials. The new "McGruff Truck" program uses decals to identify Mountain Fuel vehicles and their drivers as sources of help for children enroute to and from school, while at play or in latch key situations. McGruff Truck is an extension of the Mcgruff House program, through which children are homes taught to recognize displaying the McGruff sign as places to turn to for help. The McGruff House program, which began in Utah is now operating in 42 states, coordinated by the UCCP and the National Crime Prevention Council. The new program will be the implemented throughout companys service area. Mountain Fuel and the Council for Crime Prevention hope other utilities will also participate. "McGruff Truck is not an extension of law enforcement providers," said Daniel Collett, project director, UCCP. "The projects motto, Well call for help clearly states its purpose. The McGruff truck driver does not act as a policeman or paramedic. Hs or she simply calls for whatever help is needed. And, while the program primarily is for children, a McGruff truck driver would extend the same service to any citizen." "Education of the public -especially our children is viti'l to the success of the McGruff truck program," Collett said. McGruff truck will be introduced to children this fall through an extensive program - ol conducted local by law enforcement representatives assisted by r organizations. Instruction will include how to recognized a McGruff Truck and what assistance the driver will provide. The program will serve as a reminder to children of safety precautions they can take as well as providing assistance in parent-teache- emergencies. 'We have long been aware of the role our employees play in deterring crime simply by their presence and the visibility of Mountain Fuel vehicles in the we serve," said neighborhoods Mountain Fuel President D.N. Rose. We enjoy a good reputation as a service organization, and hope awareness of the McGruff truck will remind children and other citizens that a Mountain Fuel employee can be depended on to call for help in an emergency."
