Turner exchanged their wedding vows in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on August 17. A dinner was held at the Lion House on August 16 and a reception given at Jordan El Reception center and also in St. Louis, Mo. Ethel Bradford pre-nupti- country is far north and the growing season short. Ive interviewed many a person and have become fairly sensitive to those Im interviewing. Ive met reluctance (for many reasons); overbearing, (keep your questions to yourself. I know what I want you to write); coyness (Oh, keep telling me how great I nice! beautifull intelligent I am) etc. Ive seen them all. But I recently interviewed two men who are here from the Soviet as part of the Hercules e Inspection Team and they proved to be On-Sit- an absolute surprise. All my built-iconceptions were on alert. No fear, but. . . how would they act? Of course they would speak English, but I wondered it they would understand. . . not just my words. . . but my meaning. n I neednt have worried. As Ralph Goff and I stepped from the car, two policemen slowly wandered toward us, but before they could say one word, a door opened and a friendly bear of a man rushed out calling, "Shes all right, shes all right. Its Ethel Bradford. I recognize her from her picture." What a greeting!!!!! It was Vladimir Zhukov who greeted me and, on entering their office, Vladimir Militsyn joined us and for the next two hours the four of us talked over tea, cookies and macadamia nuts. Now, I had planned to write about Soviet women and how they differed from us. As we spoke, however, I felt I was asking empty questions inasmuch as each answer showed me how alike we women are, instead of how different. Yes, they are married, with children. Zhukov and his wife Helena have a seven year old daughter, Tatiana, while Militsyn and his wife Vera have a 14 year old son, Alexis. Helena is an economist and Vera a chemical engineer. Children begin learning a second language in the first grade with 70 taking English. They are very serious about education and we could take lessons from them in this area. Their shops and stores are much like ours except their fresh food is limited because their Some women, they told me, choose to remain home while the children are infants, while others dont, just as we do. The men both laughed and said, yes, they help with the housework, the cooking and even the laundry. Their wives get their hair done, etc. etc. etc. The same as 1 do. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Morgenegg of St. Louis, Mo. She is attending Brigham Young University, teaches aerobics for BYU and at Spa Fitness in Provo and is a chairwoman for student dances. So many likenesses. . . so few differences. And, yes, they have women doing menial work there . . . but so have we. So have we. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John R. "Jack" Turner of Kearns. He is a Kearns high graduate and has graduated from the BYU with a B.S. degree in physical education-sport- s and is to attend graduate school at BYU. He has been a cheerleader at Kearns high, University of Utah, and Robyn Morgenegg. The flower BYU and is with the United girl was Nikki Balmer. Spirit Association. And who are enjoying every bit of it, too. They spoke openly, with no reluctance, about the differences between now in the Soviet and then. They both stressed that in the past there had been so much utterly unacceptable, that, in the process of 'clearing the deck, so much was tossed out which should have been saved. That, they told, is one of the goals of the new regime. their home in Provo. Men who have held a position and power for 40 years are not going to give that power up easily." It will be slow, but change is coming, they maintain. They are here as part of the Inspection Team, yes, but they are learning from us and I hope your fathers, husbands and sons who are their counterparts in the Soviet are doing the very same thing. And if you think Im doing some serious thinking about the Soviets and us, youre right. Serious, because in some ways, I think our interplay with the Soviet people here, is every bit as important as the national politicking now covering our TV from dawn to dusk. a garden reception given at the home of the brides parents, Dr. and Mrs. David B.
