Show 10i THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, July 21, 1988 LIFESTYLE If Rose Is Ruler, Cindie And Family Are Among Its Most Loyal Subjects by Helen Glissmeyer Green Sheet Staff Writer HOLLADAY. Poets praise the velvet rose as the "queen of the garden." If this tout is true and the rose is ruler, Cindie E. Lindquist of Holladay is one of its most loyal subjects; she spends many hours each week caring for the needs of this royal flower. And her lasts all blooming kingdom summer into fall because of her devotion. From her 100 bushes, she g produces numerous roses. Thus she herself has been "crowned" with awards at the Utah Rose Societys June show, prize-winnin- and also at the Utah State Fair. Her father Don J. Edwards, also of Holladay, gave her several roses about five years ago, and also started her three sisters on the flowers production. Now the hobby has become a family affair. Often Mrs. Lindquist and her relatives take several of the top awards at the shows. Last year 13 of the top awards at the June show were acquired by Mrs. Lindquist, her father, her sisters, Jodie Hanson, Taylorsville, Kristie Rasmussen, Sandy, and her aunt, Laurel Hall of Cottonwood. Mrs. Lindquist herself won "king of the show," best pink, best fully opened and best yellow. This year the family received nine top awards, plus a fistful of first place ribbons. Even Cindies son David has 15 bushes all his own. He won two first place ribbons this year in the novice division at the rose show with his "Tiffany" and "Red Masterpiece." He also won some prize money at the state fair last year. Trisha helps Mom prune and water roses and was official watering girl at the June Nine-year-o- ld show. That she has a few secrets on growing her roses, Mrs. Lindquist admits. But she is willing to share several general tips with others. In the spring, just after the last frost about the middle to end of April she prunes the roses down to five canes, leaving them 9 to 12 inches high. She removes all the dead canes. Next she feeds them with liquid fertilizer. When the new leaves begin to peek, she uses systemic granules to work into the soil around the base of the bush. She repeats this every five to six weeks. She treats bugs and disease with a systemic spray every two to three weeks. Its important to cut the dead roses off, she says. She clips the stem just above a then the plant sends out a new shoot, which will flower again. She warns that its best to cut off the old rose before the petals fall. These petals are a mess to clean up - some roses have up to 30 petals the debris can breed - five-leafle- t, -- THE NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE CROSSWORD PUZZLE bugs. She adds one more unique procedure: wherever she cuts the stem, she puts a little dab of wood glue or nail polish. This prevents the carpenter bee from drilling into the end of the cut stem, which could kill the entire bush. To obtain exhibition roses, it is important to snip off the small buds that come along the sides of the main rose. Pinch them off as soon as you see them, or later this debudding could leave a scar. In early September, Mrs. Lindquist uses the systemic granuals for the last time. Then before the snow falls, she piles dirt up around the bottom of the bush to cover the bud joints. She advises not to cut stems in the fall, past the end of September, but to wait until they are dormant, after the first snowfall. When dormant, they can be cut if theyre too long, wont so they bend and break with the weight of the snow. She has found that the more sun you can give roses the better. They need six to eight hours of bright sunlight daily to do well. Mrs. Lindquists favorite rosea are a white hybrid tea rose called "Honor and a yellow blend hybrid tea called "Peace." Besides the hybrid tea there are floribunda, grandiflora, miniature and climber roses. But as Shakespeare said, "That which we call a rose by any (other) name would smell as sweet." When purchasing a rose bush, a person should pay a little more and get the roses, says Mrs. Lindquist. She suggests a 7.5 rating or higher. The best are high-rate- d rated 8.5 or above. "The rose is a beautiful rose which will last for years. You can find all colors, even mauve, orange, green, multicolor and striped blends." Mrs. Lindquist concludes her hints by saying: "roses do take a great deal of care but are worth it. The flowers bring just as much enjoyment." They are indeed as fragrant and lovely as so many poets portray. "Let us crown ourselves with rosebuds before be they withered." (from the "Wisdom of high-rate- d Solomon.")
