Show Carnival Designed To Boost Murrays Retail Image Three-Da- y - MURRAY. Its carnival time in Murray! Hot air balloons, banners, live music, clowns and exhibits of all kinds will be available here today, tomorrow give-alway- s, and Saturday as Murray merchants combine in a 'celebration to leading up Mothers Day. The city will take on a carnival atmosphere as the festivities emerge and evolve to fit the city-wid- e crowds. "Carnival in Murray is a e retail promotion sponsored by all the major shopping centers and retailers in the city," noted Murray Area Chamber of Commerce executive director Angie Gregg. "Its a cooperative venture to ipromote Murray as a whole," she added. "We want people to know that whatever it is that they want, they can find it in Murray. e The idea for a city-wid- ! city-wid- carnival, she said, was the of brainchild the Murray Merchants Committee comprised of representatives from most shopping centers and large retailers in the city. For the past six months, the committee has been tossing around ideas for how to promote Murray to the rest of the valley, e and the idea of a carnival celebration "was a natural," she explained. "It will involve just about everybody in the city in one way or another," she noted. Fashion R.C. Place Mall, Willey, Oakwood Riverview Plaza, Village, Ivy Place, Larry H. Miller and Murrays downtown merchants are only some of the participants in the three-daevent. But the carnival will not be the only event coordinated by the merchants committee. "We want to do cooperative advertising throughout the year," she said, "but it was decided to start off e with a promotion." Not only will the merchants be ' holding events simultaneously, but television and radio advertising has been coordinated by the merchants, with Murray city government strongly behind the plan, she said. As an example of the citys city-wid- city-wid- she cooperation - that noted banners normally prohibited by the citys strict sign ordinance - will be evident throughout the campaign as the city has agreed to "relax" its enforcement of the event. sign law for the three-daWhile cooperative efforts have -- y y into coordinating gone the festivities, "every center is planning its own festival -all different," Gregg Hot air balloons explained. "should be about just she said, with everywhere," clowns and other entertainers sprinkled throughout the dty. A drawing for a Caribbean cruise for two will be part of the celebration as the grand prize to be given away tomorrow (Friday). Entry forms for the contest are available from all Chamber member firms. The drawing will take place at Ivy Place mall at 4:30 p.m. "Our major goal, regardless of the partying and everything else going on, is to make the cash registers ring," Gregg said. "Were trying to make it a fun event, but what we really hope to accomplish is to help people oecome aware that anything they want is right here in Murray." theyre cv (hadmimt im'l cwiipSek WITHOUT A MASTER ' COLOR PORTRAIT BY DON BLAIRS!
