Green Sheet Sports Editor Bob Mickelson came a little too close to becoming a statistic on his way to work Monday morning, missing becoming the fifth car in a fatal four-ca- r collision by a breadth. hairs The following story is an "insiders" view of what happened during that fateful moment. ever-increasin- MURRAY. I thought the guy had hit my car. At first, the metallic, clattering noise had startled me. A hub cap and some other objects caught up in the airstream of a speeding pickup truck shot past. So did the noise. Like a runaway locomotive, the into a plowed head-o- n stationary vehicle waiting to turn into the Grant elementary parking lot, hurtled over it and pick-u- p . smashed broadside into another car that had been right behind the first. Debris was still flying in the air when the truck came to a rest. It wasnt until later, much later, that I came to understand how close I had come to being more than just a witness to Monday mornings fatal traffic accident in Murray. I was lucky. Betty L. Michael o Murray was not. She died from injuries sustained in the violent collision. Nine-year-o- Peter Fondaco, a ld passenger in the Michael vehicle, suffered facial lacerations and a gash to the neck. Ralph C. Holder, 6893 Rye Circle, West Jordan, the driver of the pickup, had lacerations to the face and nose area. Both underwent surgery at Cottonwood Hospital and, as of Tuesday morning, the Fondaco youth was listed in stable condition and Holder in serious condition. Three people were injured in the second car induing its driver, Deborah S. Dansie, 30, 524 West 5925 So.; her son Jeremy R. Dansie, eight; and another passenger, John A. Marrapodi, also eight, 5966 So. Circle. Jamaica They were treated and later released from Cottonwood Hospital. Two of Dansies daughters, ages three and eleven, were also passengers but escaped uniry'ured. As a reporter I have covered numerous traffic accidents and other disasters but this was the first time I had ever witnessed something so violent. Im not the kind of person that calls upon the name of diety in normal situations, but this was hardly normal. As the truck crashed into the other cars I heard myself utter, "Oh, My God." I reacted automatically--- ! pulled the car over to the side of road and reached for the camera on the seat beside me. of mine, wh0 A colleague covered the Kearns air collision, remembered walking about that scene taking pictures. He felt a strange sense of detachment, almost that of a "ghoul" or "a fly g on the wall." Like he I was numb but at that moment my job was to record the suffering of others. I was also confused of course I felt I should be helping those people, not taking pictures of them. There, reported Officer Jeff Holdridge, doctors and emergency room personnel engaged in a frantic, though eventually futile, effort to save her life. I stayed at the accident site Life-Flig- until after the airlift then headed to work with my film. Once at the office, I tried to reconstruct what I had seen by going over the story again and again with whoever might listen. After telling the story for the umpteenth time, one looked at me and said, "You know, youre lucky to be here." And it really hit me the knowledge of just how much "chance" or "fate" plays in our lives ... or the ending of them. er - Mrs. Holmes worked as Officials Watch Proposal For branch manager. But I kept on taking pictures. A Murray Police Officer, Gary Reid, who had been off duty when the accident occurred, began calling out, asking if anyone had seen the accident. I raised my hand and he ushered me into his patrol car. Soon I was joined by two other witnesses: a sobbing woman, who, like me, had just avoided being hit by the pickup, and Robert Baker, a Midvale resident. Mr. Baker had been been following me north along 7th West when his car was sideswiped by the truck. Fortunately, he was not hurt. Officer Reid told us not to talk ourselves about the among accident. Just simply write down what we had seen. I still cant remember what I put down, but I know I wrote with a still shaking hand. Officer Reid was the first Murray official to arrive on the scene, though he was quickly followed by two Murray fire engines, a paramedic unit and a rescue squad. They were joined by a Salt Lake County paramedics and several ambulances. As firefighters hosed down the street to wash away leaking gasoline, rescuers struggled to remove the Michael woman and the Fondaco youth from their car, which looked as if it had been hit by a bomb.
