Show THE GREEN SHEET 2B Thursday, April 14, 1968 THEATER Performing Arts Nominations Are Spread Out Among Areas Schools by Olga Milius Green Sheet Theater Critic MURRAY. Initial announcement of nominees for the Green Sheet Performing Arts Awards program is being made this week. The awards program will be held May 4 at 7:30 p.m. at Taylorsville high school. The Academy Awards type program which will include scenes from the shows is free and open to the public. The first group of nominees, named in this announcement, includes shows selected for set technical design, direction, orchestra, choral performance and choreography. Ballots cast by a team of 11 judges decided pathos and comedy from the Bernstein music which is the the direction of Morris F. Lee.' Curtis Hodson directed the a chorus, Cyprus large, group that did full justice to the melodious Fiddler heart of West Side Story. Four shows caught the judges eves to receive nominations for well-balanc- Choral Performance Three shows also received the nod for choral performance. Nominees listed are in alphabetical order by school. Faculty members in charge of various areas are named, but each nomination also reflects the accomplishment and involvement of students. Set Design The set is the first thing seen by the audience and judges. Although only musical sets are nominated, judges noted some outstanding sets in this years productions and the schools are to be commended on effective, attractive sets. Judges selected three shows as nominees for set design. Bill Laursen designed the set for the Cottonwood production offering an attractive, flowerdecked farmyard backed by the Oklahoma prairie and featuring a house with a usable upper porch. Gordon Olsen handled set at Kearns with a design shipboard setting that was colorful and very spacious, functional. The upper deck and added usable companionways levels throughout the show. A beautifully executed "Shadow Waltz" and ingenious lighting effects earned the nod at Murray where technical direction was handled by John Williams. Lighting, sirens and shadows were used to good effect at Taylorsville. Lance Hansen was technical director. Orchestra this category. Clinton M. Frohm directed the orchestra at Cottonwood where the young musicians made the most of the lilting Oklahoma! score. The Granite orchestra under the direction of Jim Thompson handled well the varying tempos of Damn Yankees, including the difficult mambo rhythms. The Olympus orchestra under the baton of Reed Thomas swept through the rollicking Once Upon A Mattress in high style handling both contemporary and traditional rhythms well. Technical Direction direction includes lighting, special effects, set changes and other aspects of a show, although judges try to discount problems caused by sound systems as usually being beyond the control of technical directors and their crews. Four shows were nominated. John Seibach was responsible for the technical effects at Cottonwood where a glittering Oklahoma logo dropped from above to add to the climatic title song.
