Show 4 THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, March 3, 1988 SPORTS Bulldogs Nip Pineview For Third Place In State 3A Tourney SALT LAKE CITY. The ninth appearance in the final four in his nineteen year coaching career Coach Jim Yerkovich gave probably his greatest satisfaction in those years of coaching, as his team beat a good Pine View team 0 Saturday to take third honors 3A in the place tournament held at Weber State in Ogden. Judge had won its first game over Ogden and then tangled with a strong Springville team on in a Wednesday, winning 68-6defensive struggle which saw Judges high scoring guards, Jimmy Soto and Chris Gardner, 81-8- 4, distinguish themselves with their fine defensive efforts on Springvilles Scott Hullinger and Mark Peterson. Hullinger, who had been averaging 22 points, was held to 15, while Peterson, who had been averaging 20, was held to 14. One of the differences in the game was that Judge hit on six "home run" efforts against three for Springville with Soto hitting four and Gardner two. Gardner played his best game of the year as he not only held Hullinger to 15 points but scored 23. Soto had 18, while Chris Jones, who had a sensational tournament scored 14, had 12 COME TO ME Taylorsvilles Jeff Leath- erwood leaps toward Incoming pass during semi final contest from the state 4A basketball tourna- ment at the University of Utah. Jimmy Soto took over for Judge and scored three straight baskets to give the Dogs the lead. With just seconds left, Judge was when a Pine leading by View player missed a free throw and the Judge camp, which had 64-5- 8 81-7- 8 v, turnovers against the pressure defense of Timpview. Peters broke the season record for rebounds when he came down with 14. And so the season came to an end for the Judge team which finished with a 17-- 7 record and which did so despite having only over 6, which one starter certainly goes a long way in proving that wickedness, team work and desire can go a long way. c II v The kids made a furious rally in perfect 25-- 0 season. Some errors in the first quarter enabled the Timps to take a 20-1- 1 lead and, although Judge came within five on several occasions, it could never get back to where they could go into a spread offense, which is what Coach Yerkovich wanted to do. He felt that the key point came in the third quarter when Judge 5 was behind and Jimmy Soto drove to the basket and scored and was fouled, or so it looked. But Soto was called with a charging foul and instead of being within three, Judge wound up down by seven. But Timpview was the fourth quarter." The coach was not only pleased with the way his team battled back, but with the fact it did so against an intense Layton press. Taylorsville finished with just 12 turnovers. Tough defense also played a role in the second half, as Lancer star Albert Chappell did not score at all in the final period. Dow finished with 21 points, while Chad Christensen added 15 plus seven rebounds and three key steals. Jeff Leatherwood had nine points to go with his seven assists and four rebounds. 61-5- nt points with Doug Chapman and David Madsen each having ten. Springville 77 Murray 68 A big fourth quarter, during which they scored 32 points, was not enough as the Spartans were eliminated on Friday. Coach Hamer said that he was very proud of his team as they were down by 20, but came back to within seven and he felt that the loss on Wednesday to the Timpview team, after having them in a tie at the half, may have had something to do with the fact that his team did not play that well at the beginning of the game.
