Show GREEN SHEET Thursday, January 14, 1988 Volunteers Needed At Hillsdale WEST VALLEY. It doesnt really take a lot of time, but it is so important and so helpful to the children as well as teachers, said Lois Wille, public relations commissioner for Hiiisaaie elementary PTA, discussing the schools PAT program. Volunteers for the PAT (Parents Assisting Teachers) program are needed once or twice weekly, she said, preferably at a regular time, to e work on a basis with students in reading, spelling and math or in other areas of the school.. The goal is to form a volunteer network to assist in the classrooms, office, media center, whenever and wherever help is needed, she explained. Nancy Weaver, Granite District specialist, and Phyllis Patterson, PTA community involvement commissioner met with coordinators for the PAT program early in the school year to offer a training session. Coordinators were taught how to read to, and listen to, a student, said Mrs. Wille, and they in turn teach volunteers the necessary skills. So many children need help with reading. Many don't know how to listen to a story, or to a lesson, or how to sound out letters and words, and only on a basis can they learn those skills, she said. With children in every classroom at various levels of reading, it is difficult for a teacher to offer the individual time needed to enhance reading skills, she noted. Volunteer coordinators, one to each grade, keep track of the times a teacher needs volunteer help and coordinates the need with the time offered by volunteers, she explained. to contact 6427. would like to volunteer an hour or per week at the school is asked "Tk Hcut Bezmhj Sta HAIRCUTS (Men's, Ladies PERMS (Includes Cut & Mrs. Patterson at 9k Tmuk!"
