Mary and Grant Empey of Magna, who have been together for almost 60 years, will be honored at, a family dinner this week which will commemorate their individual birthday anniversaries. Mary was born to James David and Alida Ek Coon on January 10th, 1908 in Coonville, the area just below the Bacchus Hill, and grew up in this vicinity attending Hawthorne school for the first five years, then Webster school and graduated from Cyprus. She met Grant in 1928, when he was working at Utah Copper and playing basketball for the Utah Copper Industrial League. At that time 'she was employed in the Magna Drug Store, that was owned by Chris and Pete Athas. - He continued to be employed A reader, who wishes to remain anonymous, sent in the following letter in response to my editorial concerning drivers who want to get going on the streets and roads, and, as a result, honk their horns and give obscene gestures to anyone who is driving at the posted speed limit. I like his suggestion. In fact, I like it so much that Im asking you to fill out the following form and mail it to me at the Green Sheet. Ill forward them to the Police Department and if nothing else, maybe well all have a good laugh. at Utah Copper until his marriage, but was laid off at the beginning of the Great Depression in 1929. With a family to support he went to work for Morton Salt Works, working three days a week for $3 a day. In a whole year he only made $500. And it was at the Salt Plant where he became the victim of an industrial accident which sent 44,000 volts of electricity through his body and out his right foot, creating a disability that has plagued him all his adult life. However in spite of the adversity he has been extremely active in gardening as a hobby and in keeping up his yard. In addition he was a faithful worker at the Salt Plant, retiring in Dear Ethel: You banged the nail right on the head about your feelings when you received the all American Salute for driving sensibly. Countless thousands out here feel as you do, and that something should be done about overly aggressive drivers. That something could well be someone in your position to perhaps poll your readers to see if there exists enough strong public sentiment to correct the attitudes of drivers who cause the most danger and harrassment. Do you have enough readers out there who would vote for a governor, mayor, etc., who would pledge tough and consistent law enforcement of ALL traffic laws? It could certainly be self supporting by using stiffer penalties to pay for enforcement. Tougher and better enforcement would mean patrolling front, back, side and residential streets at all hours. Also down and dirty enforcement with unmarked cars and the cops in jeeps and pickups. They are all angels when they see the light bars and the white cars. So - why dont you poll your readers and see if there isn't a big enough voice out there that favors severe law enforcement of traffic laws and would back a candidate who would give it to them. A Reader -- Douglas L. and Georgina R. Anderson are being honored by their children on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary.
