For the past 13 years people who have visited the Magna Senior Citizen Center have been sitting on a little piece of Magna history without even realizing it. A bench, which was built long before the turn of the century, was donated by Vern Sorenson, who saved it from being taken to the garbage dump when the Here also, the union men United Steelworkers Union repaired old toys for members bought the Old Pleasant Green families who were without jobs ward house (now the Open Door and had no funds to provide Christmas for their young ones. The men also made the acquaintance of Orlean Richardson, the first site director for the Magna Senior Citizen Center, who ran a bakery further up the street. Every day Mrs. Richardson would day-ol- d her give merchandise to the hungry strikers. Sorenson said that he never forgot her generosity. During this time, the union men had plenty of time not only to clean the building, but to brace up the once famous spring dance floor in the amusement hall. They also took stock of the furniture inside the building that had been left behind by the Pleasant Green ward when it moved to a new building near Cyprus high. Sorenson went on to say that there were numerous lovely old pieces of furniture that were sold incluHinowith the building, swivel chairs, straight-backe- d antique 8 chairs and what was desk, but thought to be a was actually the sacrament table. Under the stage in the amusement hall the union men also found some golden oak folding chairs with cane seats. flat-to- p According to Sorenson, the piece of furniture (that was known as a "settle bench" in Colonial days) was in deplorable condition when he found it, with at least three of the approximately 40 small spokes across the back missing, the layers of dark brown varnish the completely obliterating beautiful golden oak wood. MOURNERS BENCH . . . Frances Baker, front, and Fern Llewellyn sit on an antique "mourners bench" which was placed at the front of a church chapel for relatives of the deceased to sit on. The bench plays in the Magna Senior Center, Recognizing the hidden beauty of the object he took the bench home with the intention of restoring it along with two wooden straight-bac- k armchairs that once sat behind the pulpit in the original part of the old church. Once he got the bench home, dis- - the blessing of the sacrament so that the water would be blessed. The communal cups, that were still being used between 1916 and 1920, had two handles, one on each side like a loving cup. They were passed by the deacons to the person on the end of the row, who in turn handed them to their neighbor for a sip of the sacramental water. . In later years the water was served in silver trays with a basket shaped handle, with crystal glasses about the size of a shot glass. Now the trays are made of plastic and the cups are disposable paper or plastic. Mrs. Howard also noted that the sacrament table was under the jurisdiction of Roy and Bertha Coon Chambers for a long period of time. She washed and ironed the linen each week and they both sterilized the containers from which the sacrament was taken. They also provided flowers from their garden every Sunday for the ceremonial altar. Today, the sacrament table is in someones home being used as a desk, and the sacrament bench has been given a place of honor in the Magna Senior Citizen Center where it is enjoyed by those who visit the facility. It is also a conversation piece for those who love antiques. But most importantly, this little piece of the past that came out of the 19th Century into the 20th Century, is still giving pleasure to those who love beauty. Sorenson took all the old varnish off with a hand drill and sanding disk, with additional sanding i done by hand. He worked all summer to put the bench back into shape. He also restored the straight-backe- armchairs. d In September 1974, through the efforts of the Magna Community Council, the old Mori Restaurant was purchased for a senior citizen center, and people began to donate furniture to the facility. Sorensons contribution was the lovely old golden oak bench that many have thought was a "mourning bench". However, closer scrutiny by Mary Howard, whose grandmother, Mary Barr Spencer, donated the ground for the Pleasant Green church, revealed that the bench had actually been the priesthood bench at the sacrament table. Mrs. Howard said that the bench was located just off the raised area where the bishopric sat in the chapel, with the left arm against the east side of the building, facing south. In front of it was the sacrament table, which was similar in design to the bench. Facing north on an identical bench were the deacons who served the sacrament to the congregation. She went on to say that when the first part of the building was constructed in 1897, the method of serving the sacrament was a communal one. KeyCorps roots go back many years, just as do CSBs. "KeyCorps beginnings go back 150 years," said Richard K. Hemingway, CSBs Chairman of the Board. "They have been a New very successful York bank and have developed a unique snow-bel- t strategy by concentrating their growth efforts in Americas smaller cities and towns across the countrys northern tier. Their focus has been on home town banking, just like CSB." During the month of January the familiar Commercial Security Bank signs will be replaced with new Key Bank signs. "The most challenging sign change will be on the Key Bank Tower in downtown Salt Lake," said Kendell. "Those signs were originally installed with the use of a helicopter. It will be very interesting to watch that change." CSB is one of Utahs oldest up-sta- banking institutions. Its roots go 'back to 1875 when John W. Guthrie established a bank in his store in Corrine. That bank was the beginning of Commeiaal Security Bank. In 1877 John W. Guthrie established a branch of his bank in Ogden, which had become the final rail junction of the Central and Union Pacific Railroads. In 1884 the Bank received a national charter and changed its name to Commercial National Bank. Commercial Security Bank was created in 1925 through the merger of Commercial national Bank and the Security State Bank. 1 988 $10.00 OFF Select Groups Men's Women's Parkas Sportcoats Sweaters Hooded Jackets Blazers See Store for Details MAY 8E USED FOR AS MANY ITEMS AS YOU WISH COUPON EXPIRES JANUARY 31,1 988 EACH COUPON I $15.00 OFF Select Groups Men's Women's Suede Front Sweaters Parkas Winter Coats See Store for Details EACH COUPON MAY BE USED FOR AS MANY ITEMS AS YOU WISH I COUPON EXPIRES JANUARY 31, 1988 1.00 OFF Men's Women's Men's Suits Regularly $149.99 to EACH COUPON Select Groups $ 1 89.99 Toni Woods Blazers Regularly $49.99 See store for Details MAY BE USED FOR AS MANY ITEMS AS YOU WISH I COUPON EXPIRES JANUARY 31, 1988 (kjiVfjfrA ) 11 5461 So.
