He lobbied the legislature, coerced the school board, battled for programs that would improve the lot of students and employees alike. Reed Call has many friends in the media. This newspaper is most appreciative of the way he has treated our reporters and editors during his tenure. He was always cognizant of the special problems a weekly newspaper has in terms of competing with other news outlets. Important Granite District announcements were always timed so that we could be as prompt as possible in reporting them. He was aware of our press deadlines and On Monday Dr. Loren Burton will assume the responsibility of heading the nations 34th largest school district when John Reed Call steps down after 14 years as Granite superintendent. The Green Sheet applauds the selection of Dr. Burton, who was serving as an assistant superintendent at the time of his appointment. He is a particular favorite of Green Sheet staff members who have worked closely with him over the years while he served in various school posts and later as a Dr. Burton is highly qualified to assume this important post in Utahs education system. It was no surprise to us that a nationwide search revealed that the best man for the job was right here at home. He joins two other fine school chiefs in the Green Sheet area. After just a year in the post, Ron Stephens has given Murray School District dynamic leadership that will e be of benefit to the entire community. I am concerned about what I believe is misinformation regarding the Countys efforts to sell its land at 9400 South 1300 East, which sale would enable us to follow thiough on our commitments regarding funding of County recreation in the South East quadrant, and a contribution toward a Sandy Library from the proceeds of such sale. Specifically, I want you to know that the County has actively attempted to obtain a sale of its 9400 South property. We spent a great deal of time on a proposed $3,600,000 cash sale of the property, that we were informed was frustrated when the developer, Mr. Richard Haws, contacted you and was advised that a conditional use application, based on a site plan that he had produced, had no chance of success. I would appreciate an opportunity to advise you and your Council further. If you will permit it, Roger Ilillam of our Real Estate Section will come to your Council meeting, report to you, and answer any questions that you may have. Armed with hindsight, I think I can. To refresh your memory, it was the opinion of almost everyone who cared to say anything about the subject that the New York Giants were absolutely unbeatable. They were the greatest thing since the Steelers really were. On paper. The Giants - the New York Ants according to the fellow who writes that clever Bottom 10 column that is syndicated across stumbled out of the the nation gate, got caught by the strike and never recovered.
