Students at Hunter junior high found there is more to building a bridge than just tossing a rope across a ravine when they participated in a bridge building and testing contest. Teacher Bill Walker said his eighth graders came up with some very interesting designs as they participated in the activity. The class studied basic truss construction, he explained, learning such concepts as compression forces, tension forces and bracing, and each built their own bridge of balsa wood. Each of the 50 students was responsible to design and build his own model, the teacher said. Using the basic truss, the element of construction used in homes and bridges everywhere, they learned to calculate compression tension on braces by use of math. I didnt tell them this, but they were actually using trigonometry to Honor Roll Is Released At Kearns the formulas applied to building units in houses, to build roofs that will hold weight, he explained. One piece of w'ood alone will break very easily, he noted, but if students use the right principles of building, the balsa bridges can support incredible amounts of weight. One student built a model that supported 254 pounds of pressure, he said. Others ranged from 70 pounds to 140, 150 and 180 pounds of pressure. The kids exemplify creativity, he observed. We could see where the pressure first hit and which type of structure held the longest; square, triangular or railroad style, he said. Students were also discussing types of glue used and whether that made a diflerence to the strength of the structure, he said.
