Fraser just completed his seventh record the year before, then 4 and year at Granger and his seventh trip so it goes, a combined total of to the state playoffs. In fact, in that in seven years. Fraser said that he feels fortunate seven years, his teams have never to be at Granger and obviously its had a losing season. A lot of people probably didnt pay much attention to it. An football coach trots out onto the field, taps the arm of an opposing player, whos being carried off in stretcher, and offers a few words of consolation. One week later, with the game lost and the opposing team running out the clock, the same coach cautions his troops, Hey, keep it classy guys. In the heat of battle, this coach once mentioned, its hard not go around screaming and hollering. But, its important, he feels, that coaches set an example to the young men in their charge. Perhaps this coach has whats most important in high school athletics clearly in mind. The fact that his program has compiled a 27-- 5 record and earned its second league title in the last three three years is just, really, the icing on the cake. Its also proof that football coaches can be nice guys and that nice guys dont really finish last. Granger head football coach Mike Fraser is such a coach and, based on the above, its easy to see that more went into his selection as Green Sheet Football Coach of the Year than just the Lancers 10-- record and trip to the state semi-finalBeside being a sportsman and a good football coach, Fraser is one other thing, modest, genuinely modest if the difficulty incurred in getting him to talk about himself is any indication. Ask him about his teams success and hell tell you about his assistant coaches, Chad Van Orden, Wes Wilcken, Sean Johnson and Wade Sloan; about the quality of young men hes been privileged to coach; about the support of his administration, the studentbody, the parents. On his consoling of an injured Clearfield player, he stated: Youve got to remember, these are 16, 17, kids giving everything they have, playing under tremendous pressure. Its heartbreaking when one of them gets hurt, no matter what team hes on. 8-- 3 2 47-2- 1 ? assistant. Hes spent the two years prior to that at Cyprus and retains some good memories there as well. But then thats typical of the man. Win or lose, hes never, at least to this reporter, ever tried to run down an opponent. He always has something good to say about the opposing team. Hes also helpful, cheerful and communicative with the press, something that some may feel is a secondary function as a coach, but a function he values. It means a lot to the kids to see their names in print and read about the games, he said. The first thing they do Thursday morning is run out, grab the Green Sheet and sit and read it with their Wheaties. His concern about his players couldn't have been reflected better than after last Fridays loss to Orem. Fraser was worried that quarterback Bill Rieser might dwell on the interception that ended the game instead recalling the incredible comeback he helped engineer and the 27 touchdowns hes ran and passed for this season. He spoke with pride about Ken Kinnear, who came back from a near fatal stabbing incident to again lead the defense. He couldve mentioned all 65 players. Hopefully, they learned a little about life as well as football Friday. That what mattered most is that they didnt give up. s. Volleyball All-Sta- noted Leatherwood, Layton, 7:30. Theyre a hard working bunch, coach Clark said of his charges. They wear me out. The coach believes he has a pretty good nucleus to work with in Clark, Wickizer, Cosby and others, though he noted that having the player inside may force the Cougars to play two different offensive and defensive styles, one with him in and another with him out. Judge its 1987 basketball season at home this a good weekend, entertaining Pleasant Grove team tomorrow (Friday) at 7:30 and then playing host to Davis on Saturday at 7 p.m. Coach Jim Yerkovich stated that his team had the strongest contingent of guards in the school's history and that it was possible that his starting team would Jae made up of a center and four guards, meaning Judge will have a lack of height but will have better ball handling than usual. According to Yerkovich, the starting lineup looks like it will feature Micah Peters, a 6 senior at center. Yerkovich says that Peters is one of the best rcbounders he has ever coached. Chris Gardner, a 0 senior, will also start and will key the pressure defense that Judge has always played. Chris Jones, who played a great deal as a freshman last year and who is described by Yerkovich as one of the best sophomores he's coached, will also The fourth starter start. Jones is will be Jimmy Soto, a 8 junior, who transferred to Judge from South last fall. Soto is recognized as one of the premier point guards in the state. Other players who will pay a big part in the team include Brian Clark, a 0 senior whom Yerkovich says is the most improved player on the team; Kellen Akiyama, an outstanding rcbounder and Nate Semerad, a 0 sophomore. David Webster, a 4 junior, justin 6 Rob Walsh, a sophomore, Solvason, 0 sophomore, and Lane Cannon, a sophomore, round out the team. Coach Yerkovich mentioned that Judge will play Cyprus at home on Dec. 4. He added that he felt that the Region will be very tough this year, and that he hopes that his experiment of going with a center and four guards will work out well, though he would prefer to have more height to go with the good ball handling. open 5-- 6-- 6-- 6-- 6-- 6-- 5-- 496 un,ve?e9 ea. pc.
