Cyprus American in Legion baseball crew kept itself the upper crust of the valley league vicstandings with two hardfought one edging loss, tories against last Wednesday night Brighton on then slipping past Hillcrest Monday, while losing to visiting on Saturday (see Granger Granger story). (see Murray story), Friday Grangers American Legion team rallied to pick up two impressive 9-- wins, defeating Cyprus at Cyprus Saturday and knocking off visiting on Monday. Skyline 2 Beats Midvale, Hillcrest - over With wins 6 Hillcrest last homestanding Wednesday and visiting Midvale on Monday, Kearns Legion baseball team kept itself hot on the heels of league leading West Jordan, finishing up with a 1 record. Kearns also participated in the Cowboy Oil Tourney in Pocatello over the weekend, winning three games, while losing two. Legion Mark 7-- 1 Kearns 6, Midvale 1 9-- 1 7-- Kearns Slates Tourney For Legion Teams jf : i , Ci KEARNS.. As part of the Hometown Days celebration in Kearns, the Kearns American J. Legion baseball team will host its .; annual tournament tomorrow (Fri-- : day), Saturday and Sunday at Win-sField in South Ridge Park, 5200 So. 4000 West. ; Teams competing will be Granger, t. , Helper, St. Tri-Cit- George and Blackfoot of Idaho along with host Kearns. Games will be played at 10 a.m. and 12:30, 3, 5:30 and 8 p.m. all three days. Tomorrow, Granger will open with y at 10 a.m., Helper against St. George at 12:30 p.m., Helper vs. Blackfoot at 3, Granger vs. Blackfoot at 5:30 and Kearns against St. George at 8. In addition, Kearns coach Steve Dallin announced that the team will be holding its annual fund raising rummage sale Saturday. The team still needs items donated for the sale. For more information, call coach Dallin at Tri-Cit- 968-153- Kearns got off to a solid start with three runs in the bottom of the second, as Jerry Smith doubled, Mike Peterson stroked an rbi single, John Penrod singled in Peterson, Brad Clark singled and Troy Staley doubled in Clark. Midvale got its only run in the top cf th',-Paul Simmons doubled and Tom Rhinehart singled. Kearns cancelled out that run in its half of the third, as Smith reached on an error and Peterson singled him home. Kearns added single runs in the fourth and sixth, Dunyon singling in the fourth and scoring on an error, while Clark turned out the lights with a solo home run in the sixth. Peterson and Clark both went 2x3 as Kearns totalled up 9 hits. Peterson, who went the distance on the mound, struck out nine and give up six hits. Kearns 9, Hillcrest 6 11-- 9 6 Taylorsville 7, Hillcrest 6 Taylorsville (designated the home team though game was played at Hillcrest) got Hillcrest down early then hung on as Hillcrest staged a comeback that included four runs in the top of the seventh. Taylorsville notched two runs in the bottom of the third then matched Hillcrests one- - with three doubles, as Kearns picked up 10 hits. Staley started on the mound for Kearns, working three innings before Lonnie Anderson relieved. Bryan Swapp came on in relief for Hillcrest, giving up only one hit in his three innings of work. Hillcrest also had 10 hits, led by Bills, who added a double to his home run. 3x4 Pocatello Tournament in After defeating Twin Falls its first game, Kearns lost a heartbreaker to Grand Junction in nine innings. Avenging a league loss to West Jordan with a win, Kearns then knocked off and lost to host Pocatello 6 2 5 Tri-Cit- y 12-- 9 11-- LEGION 9 Hillcrest at Cottonwood Granite at Kearns Thursday, July 4 pm 4 pm 6 Hillcrest opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the second, but Kearns moved in front to stay with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. After John Brown singled, Staley and Dunyon notched rbi doubles and Todd Funderburk swatted an two-rusingle. Kearns picked up three runs in the second, Staley and Dunyon doubling again, Derek Christensen and Darrin Bills contributing rbi singles. Kearns finished its scoring in the third, Brown singling in Clark and Dunyon doubling in Brown. After trailing Hillcrest got back into the game with three runs in the top of the third. Hillcrest finished with a flurry, as Walt Bills homered in the fifth. Dunyon led Kearns offense going n 7-- Taylorsville Splits In Thin Schedule TAYLORSVILLE. The American Legion crew from out of the Taylorsville area suffered through what had to be one of the strangest weeks of this young season, overcoming Hillcrest at Hillcrest Thursday only to be upset at Judge the following day (see Judge story). Taylorsville is currently participating in the prestigious Carson City tournament, where, in Mondays opening round, it suffered a los to Kenowick, Washington. and Chris Brighton didnt get back on the board until the top of the fifth, adding two runs on singles by Doub Webb, Rich and Erickson. Two Brighton runs came home in the sixth, Rich singling in both. Brighton finished with one in the seventh, Erickson tripling then scoring on Craig Cheneys single. Cyprus had eight hits and Brighton seven. Allen was the winning pitcher, striking out nine before being relieved by Lohmeyer in the seventh. while the fifth saw Ryan Quintana reach on an error, steal second then moved to third and home on wild pitches. Hillcrest got its only run when Shane VanKomen was safe on an error, moved up on two walks then scored on Benny Smiths single. Cyprus had three hits in the con- 9-- 2 Kearns Nets KEARNS. Erickson Seegmiller. Cyprus responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, sparked by singles by Allen and Nunley. Three more Cyprus runs were added in the second on a double by Clint Meyer and singles by Allen and Lohmeyer. Cyprus notched single runs in the third and fifth, as, in the third, Quintana singled, moved up on a hit by Nunley and scored on Hathaway sacrifice. In the fifth, following basehits by Nunley and Hathaway, Meyer delivered an rbi single. Depending on whose scorebook you look at, Cyprus pitcher Preston Lohmeyer threw either a one or a r against Hillcrest, but both books agreed he struck out 17 batters along the way, prompting Hillcrest coach Bob Keyes to call it the best pitching performance Ive seen in two years. Cyprus picked up a run in the bottom of each of the second, fourth and fifth innings. In the second, Paul Alien singled, stole second, moved up on a Mike Nunley and scored on a sacrifice fly by Derek Hathaway. In the fourth, Nunley singled in Allen, Granger Rallies For Two Victories 6 run performance in the third. After Hillcrest had scored a single run in the top of the fifth, Taylorsville picked up four runs, including the winning tally, in the bottom of the sixth. Hillcrest, as mentioned. rallied in the top of the seventh. Tavlorville hurler Mark Tolbert was sailing along until the Hillcrest rally, when Peterson came on relief. Tolbert and Peterson combined for 10 strikeouts. Todd Asay was the losing pitcher, working all seven innings, striking out five. Taylorsville had nine hits to Hillcrests eight, but was aided by three Hillcrest errors. Tolbert and Gaylen Evans each crashed home runs, while doubles went to Mark Roberts and Peterson. For Hillcrest, Rourke McMorris had three hits, while Derin Milne, Asay, Jagre Kimura and Bryan Swapp added doubles. In the bottom half of the inning, Granger responded with a run as Scott Dalton singled, stole second and scored when Richard Hickmon hit in a fielders choice. Granger tied with a run in the second, as Trevor Sugden also hit into a fielders choice that allowed Jake Shewmake to find his way home. The real clincher was applied in the third inning, when Granger picked up five runs as Dalton singled, stole second, moved up on a walk and a steal and scored on Hickmons single; Peterson singled in Hickmon and scored on a wild pitch; and Sugden added an rbi double. Granger finished with two rusn in the fourth as Hickmon doubled and Peterson homered. Shewmake pitched the distance for Granger, striking out five and not giving up a walk. Granger had nine hits and Skyline seven. Granger?, Cyprus 2 Granger knocked Cyprus starting pitcher Preston Lohmeyer in the first inning, scoring all seven of its runs. After two walks and an Embley single, Peterson hit a two-rusingle, Shewmake singled in a run, Tracy Greenwood and Sugden added rbi singles and Dalton finished with a run scoring double. Cyprus got one run in the fourth when Clint Meyer came in on a Bill Robbs ground out. Cyprus finished in the fifth as Trent Dea hit his way on base, moved up on a single by Mike Nunley and scored on a wild pitch. goKelly Peterson had a ing til the fifth inning and finished the game by giving up five hits. He was aided by good defense, which accounted for two double plays in the final inning. Granger had 10 hits and maded only one error, reported Fratto, compared to four by Cyprus. Murray Wins Two, Loses Two In Legion The big inning for Murray started with a single by Haynes, another single by Doug Chapman with Hunt singling in both Haynes and Chapman, and a Holladay error allowed Guy Anderson, who had reached on an error, to score, and a hit by drove in a run and another error allowed Bolingbroke to score the fifth run of the inning. Holladay scored three of its runs on a three run home by Gary Ogden and a single by Jeff Geertsen drove in the other. Coach Dennis Davies Legion team split four games during the past week, winning over 2 and Holladay 4 and Granger and to Tooele losing to Brighton MURRAY. 11-- 1 Brighton 9, Murray 1 In Mondays loss to Brighton, Gino Haynes started for Murray and went four innings with Rion Thomas working two and Darren Wack finishing. Murray scored its lone run of the game in the fourth when Cheyenne Winget walked, stole second and came around on Doug Chapmans single. Erickson pitched the first four innings for Brighton with Peterson coming on in the fifth. Chamberlain and Bate both had doubles for the winners with Kevin Bolingbroke getting a two bagger for Murray. Bate also had a home run for the winners. Kevin Bolingbroke went 2x3 for the Murray team. One of the two Granger hits was a double by Steve Embley. Tracy Greenwood started for Granger and was relieved in the second inning by Scott Dalton. 11-- 2 Tooele 8, 5, Holladay 4 Murray! outfield error on a dropped fly Tooele led to three Tooele runs and gave the home team an win over Murray on Wednesday. The error came with the score in the sixth and killed Murrays chances of a late inning comeback. Judge won only one of its three Legion games during the past week but that one win was a big one as they defeated favorite Taylorsville last Friday but dropped games to Bingham and to Granite 11-- 9 12-1- 0 7-- Judge It, Tville 9 In the shocker over Taylorsville Judge scored two in the first only to have the visiting Warriors come back with five in the second. But in the bottom of that inning Judge scored four on a tremendous 370 foot grand slam home run by Cameron Kersey to take the lead Taviorsville scored two in the top of the third, to lead again but Kersey wasnt to be outdone as he belted his second grand slammer in the bottom of the inning to highlight a five run explosion that gave Judge an lead which held up for the game. Robert Chacon went the distance for Judge while Wood and pitched for. the losers.
