SEEN ON THE SCREEN IN 19X6 I)EPT.: Each year, usually during the first few weeks of January, a quaint, if not extremely curious, ritual takes place which has no bearing on world peace, contributions to medical science or advancements in education. The ritual we refer to is one which sends movie critics, the world over, scurrying to their typewriters to crank out a column about what they feel were the best movies released the previous year. While it cannot be definitely established, it is believed that this rite has been practiced since either before C.B. DeMille was in short pants or at the time that Elmo Lincoln was whizzing through the trees as the first Tarzan of the silent screen. Be that as it may, and it will, selecting the best movies of the previous year is truly a difficult task because just as you think youve found a real gem, along comes another movie which is far superior in all aspects. With the hundreds of movies released each year (some of s the which completely theaters and go directly into video, picking sticky sparkle cause a makers and then there are the few who seem to pan almost all films made in English and praise just about every European film (are ya listening Rex?) with subtitles in order to show off the skills they course. learned at the Thankfully, these hacks are in the minority. Not selecting the best films of the previous year is breaking a ritual and similar to the threat of breaking a chain letter. So, rather than facing a possible expulsion to Des Moines, Iowa for three weeks, here are our choices for the best movies released in 1980 in no particular order : Nothing In Common Back To School Children Of A Lesser God Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home Ruthless People Crocodile Dundee Soulman That's Life Peggy Sue Got Married the best of the lot can be a problem which can add to polite conversation or verbal, if not physical, For the most part, critics go to the movies for the same reason you do, to be entertained. And, again for the most part, they give you their honest opinions of the movies they've seen in an effort to guide the movie-goe- r to the best of what's out there (with the possible exception of the Los Angeles film critics who must consider "the odder, the stranger, the better." After all. they chose Brazil as the best film of 1985). There are some critics, albeit only a few, who will praise a movie to the heavens only because it has their favorite actor or actress, was directed by someone they revere or because their cousin had a small part as an extra in the film.
