Ad9 ministering a beating on Granger high Friday night netted Cottonwood a share of runner-u- p honors in the Region Three basketball race and the right to face East in the opening round of the 4A state tournament. 79-3- According to Cottonwood Coach Blair Martineau, that means the Colts will have to take on Josh Grant and company. Game time is set for 2:30p.m. today (Thursday). Thats a tough game for the first but day, reported Martineau, well be ready. If the Colts get by East they would play next at 8:10 p.m. on Tuesday. Should they lose, they would play at 6: 30 Tuesday. Fridays game, as it turned out, was decided in the early going. Cottonwood came out in an upbeat, fast break tempo and the Lancers had trouble keeping pace. After just eight minutes of play, the Colts had adraced out to a vantage. By the midway point, the Cottonwood lead was 25, 25-1- 44-1- 9. Martineaus regulars saw less and less action as the game wound down. However, things didnt seem to slow down for Cottonwood even with its bench in the game. We got off to fast start and theyre (Granger) just not a fast break team, stated Martineau. They had trouble responding to our style. Granger also had trouble shooting from the field, its percentage for the night winding up in the lower thirties. During the first half, Cottonwood, with its starters carrying most of the load, shot 63 percent from the field. That dropped to the low forties and upper thirties in the second half. Turnovers were also a factor, according to Martineau, Cottonwood turning in a season low of two, compared to 17 for Granger. Brad Burton was the top scorer for Cottonwood with 19 points, while Mike Metcalf and Greg Brown each turned in 14. For Granger, Chuck Kipp had 11 points and Steve Embley nine. Taylorsville also drew a tough assignment to kick things off in d Mondays headliner against Bountiful. The Braves are big and talented and must rank among the tourney favorites. Theyve lost just a pair. That contest will be played at 8: 10 p.m. It features a Taylorsville team that is on a hot streak, and a club that knows how to win the close ones. In play, which included a win over East, the Warriors posted a 1 mark.
