A proposal by the Utah Liquor Commission to relocate the liquor store here brought strong opposition from the Magna ty Council last week. In making the presentation, Kenneth Winn and Dennis Kellen noted they were entertaining the idea for av couple of reasons. First, they noted, the state wants its stores in the most trafficked areas where people shop and secondly, the Magna store is one . ofJwo stores left that has -sales, instead of self- service. The space at the present location will not allow us to expand into a e Kellen said, store, and the parking is basically on the street, However, there is no problem except during holidays. He went on to say that John Gust, who is expanding the Arbor Park Shopping Center, had made contact with the Liquor Commission offering space in the new expansion, and the Commission would like to have input from the council concerning the posed move. Chick Paris took issue with the er self-servic- contentions about lack of parking at the Magna facility, pointing out that package stores at 4th South and 2nd West and one on Redwood Road near 2500 South had less parking and, even with generated long lines of people waiting to buy during the holidays. Our experience has shown us that we need to get it out in front. The losses that the Magna store has suffered are not real losses to the total picture for the Liquor Commission, Art Flangas countered. Its not because the store has losttt money, it is because of the unemployment. Those who worked at Kennecott and patronized the Magna store on the way home from work are no doubt buying their liquor in Kearns. Redevelopment Agency - Director Appointed WEST VALLEY. A member of the Murray City Council has been named the first director of this citys Redevelopment Agency. Larry S. Catten, 991 W, Sunberry Way, was named director of the agency during a Redevelopment Agency session last week. Catten, who was first elected to the Murray City Council in 1981 and in 1983, assumed part-tim- e responsibility of the agency this week and will report for fulltime work May 1. He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Utah with a degree in political science in 1977 and is now seeking a law degree from the UofU. He has served as a law clerk for the Utah Department of Business Regulation and as chairman of the board for the Murray City Redevelopment Agency. Catten was formerly an employee relations representative for Kennecott Corporation and served in the same capacity for the Utah Public Employees Assn. City Manager John Newman said Catten, who will work out of the Community Development Department, plans to keep his seat on the council in Murray as long as no conflicts develop. Newman told the Green Sheet, Its an issue thats up in the air. I dont know if there is any pressure there (from Murray City. As far as West Valley City is concerned, he can remain a Murray councilman as long as a conflict doesnt occur. Both cities have meetings on the same nights, council work sessions every other Tuesday and council meetings every other Thursday. Newman said there is no state statute against such an arrangement. Joseph Moore, director of the Community Development Department and Cattens boss, said he too, is certain the situation will work out. Catten, formerly of Magna, is married to the former Jackie Coon. They have three children. ' |
