Show 6 THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, February 14, 1985 Commmmeimft That's What He Said, By Golly Safety Is Challenge, Concern To Citizens, Governments The subject of safety comes to the forefront most often after a traumatic experience evolves from a deficiency in the system of precautionary procedures established for the purpose of guarding life and limb. Most anyone in the valley can recall an instance of corrective measures being sought out - even carried out - following a tragic accident. Many times, the contention is made that had a certain precautionary step been taken or a safety device been in place, the tragic accident would have been averted. No one, of course, can say for certain that a life would have been saved had a precautionary measure been carried out beforehand. Few, for that matter, have the stomach for .challenging those who have lost loved ones and are now pleading that "something must be done." The City Council in West Valley City is currently faced with the challenge of responding to a group of citizens seeking greater safety for pedestrians, especially students. Their appearance last week at a council meeting stems from a tragedy in January when a teen-agboy died after being struck by a vehicle. Going home from school, he was walking along 3600 West, a street without sidewalks at the accident scene. Demands that "something must be done" from the citizens are certainly in order. -- e The challenge to the City Council is to come up with a method of assuring pedestrian safety, while at the same time, providing a means of financing such a project. Priorities must be set. The of citizens would seem to occupy the elite position of number one in priority. But will taxpayers underwrite a project that strives for safety at any cost? Funding, the second priority, will play a major role in just how far in safety program is carried. Thorough examination of the situation should yield a compromise that seems suitable on both sides of the. Some would believe that the greater the funding, the safer the conditions, and vice versa; the lesser the funding, the more hazardous. Each community must decide for itself how much it wants to invest in safety. Each community also must recognize there is a present need to address the safety matter. They need not wait for tragedy to prompt them into action. The concern is universal in the county. No area, it would seem, is immune to accidents that could safety have been avoided with some precautions. Not West Valley, Murray, Kearns, Sandy, Bennion, Midvale, Magna, West Jordan, Taylorville, Millcreek . . . well-bein- g My teacher, who gave them to me, went on to explain that if we accept just half of what we preach, we will see the truth of the phrase and never, ever, get caught in mechanically prolonging life. Amid her threats of a lawsuit, - despite having completely she misunderstood she what thought had read, she made a good point. But I couldnt get in a word to tell her so before she slammed down the phone. She felt a story in one of our papers had libeled people who live in mobile home parks. It didnt, but during her tirade, she expressed utter iritation with those people who attend town meetings or zoning hearings and act as though a mobile home park is the worst thing that could happen to a community. I didnt have a chance to tell her I was raised in a mobile home. Only they were called trailers then and we were often dubbed trailer I didnt have a chance to explain that I completely agree that todays mobile home parks are an asset to often any area. They are well-kepadults-onl- y communities, complete with amenities such as pools and clubhouses. They have covenants that are often much more restrictive than a subdivisions. But still people scream and holler when a mobile home park is proposed. They also yell about condominiums and apartments. To the point where it becomes d difficult to maintain that trash. trailer because my father worked on construction and we were forced to move a lot. He made good money, I got good grades in school and mother had the respect of those who knew her. Our home was truly mobile. Unlike the ones today which are often luxury homes. Nor did I get to tell her that my parents manage a lovely mobile home park inhabited by some really neat people. The kind of people no one could possibly object to having for neighbors. We lived in a t, middle-of-the-roa- approach news reporters are supposed to have. I suppose the one legitimate com plaint people use in zoning hearings is increased traffic - but thats something were all going to have to live with in an urban and growing area, no matter how the open space is developed. As for overcrowding our schools, studies show that subdivisions produce far more children per acre than do condos, or even apartments. Then they get really nasty and cast aspersions on the kind of people who will live in the developments and how it will increase the crime rate. How can they possibly know that? You will find good and bad people everywhere you go - in subdivisions, mobile home parks and apartments. Id be willing to bet that more of them will be good than bad -everywhere. I guess a single-famil- y home is the American dream. But for some, it is neither practical or desirable. I know thats true because I am one of those. I own a third of and reside in a dreaded duplex. Thanking heaven each day that eight years ago an attempt to buy a home in a subdivision didnt work out. I dont have to wonder every time I pull out of my driveway if a neighbors child might be playing behind the car or will dart out in front of me as I come home. We live on Van Winkle Expressway and are virtually sur rounded by one of Murrays largest apartment developments. Crime and noise have not been a problem and traffic is but a minor irritant once in awhile. I guess a few of my neighbors fail to exercise their right to vote. But that hurts them more than me. Of course. Im not a politician. I guess Im an oddball, but I find a community more viable when its made up of all kinds of people. A variety of opinions, lifestyles, attitudes, What question: interests, religions, aspirations and backgrounds are what have made America great and Murray, Sandy, West Valley, South Jordan, Midvale, West Jordan, Taylorsville, Magna, Draper are what they are because of the people who live there. ' Contrary to what some may think, it would be a sad world if we all thought, dressed and acted alike. This is not to say that I dont believe that cities haven't a responsibility to insure quality development, They do. But quality does not simply mean single-familNor do I think that the laws and mores of a people are unimportant, but all of us must learn to be more tolerant of those whose lifestyle may differ from ours. Tolerant even of those who holler at us and then hang up before we can agree with them. People dont cling frantically to life in order to make another million dollars. They don't long for time to buy another car . . . build another house . . . marry or divorce again. No, the time longed for, pleaded for, is time to finish up the pattern of giving and receiving love. The lowest, according to my teacher, is where you cling to life, grasping for one more pill . . one more machine a new heart, kidney, lung or whatever. Begging, pleading, for one more hour, one more day, one more year. Such action is caused because the person feels his life is incomplete and wants time to make it right. If I have a few more days, the person thinks, perhaps my children will tell me they love me. If I have a little more time I will be able to tell them that I love them. The time begged for, you see, is to finish up emotions and words that should have been said all through the days, months and years of life. Not kept until the last moment. After all, you don't start digging a well when the house is already on fire. Residents have talked to religious leaders of all denominations and all religious of all denominations have opposed certain developments. The Murray School Board has opposed certain developments. Murray officials have gone right on doing whatever they wanted in spite of from the people that elected them. Mark Hayes Sandy JoLynn Snelgrove Salt Lake Jim Vreeken, Teacher Granite District I think they would be great. They would be better for taxes and for teachers. I always forgot a lot over the summer and had to start over in the fall. The school year would seem to go faster for kids with more breaks more often. The only disadvantage would be for those who are in special summer programs like the drum and bugle corps I was in. I would love year-roun- d schools. They would keep education costs down and I think the kids would remember what they learn better. I program will be hope a year-roun- d used in most schools and my kids will just accept it as normal. My oldest child is three years old and I would like him to go year-rounwhen he begins school. It would give mothers more of a break, too I am in favor of them, though parents may oppose them because of planning problems. We have million h dollar plants sitting idle of every year. Tax payers should insist on better utilization. There are many educational advantages to offering a fourth quarter focused on college bound students and others with special needs who may get lost in the present system. 6:00 d Hours Daily a.m. to Sun. 7:00 1:00 a.m. 10:00 74 AVV 'S SPECIAL BREAKFAST Herd, Downtown Sugar Hou Rosa Park Midvale .... 888 So. 2nd E. ... 2120 S. th E. 112 N. 900 W.7065 S.
