The annual candy sale Utah Camp Fire Council is scheduled to begin tomorrow (Friday) and run through Feb. 28. This is the only official fundraising event held by the organization. Proceeds will be used to make it possible for girls and boys to attend day camp or resident camp, along with a host of other activities held during the year. It also provides funds for volunteer leader training and other support for local clubs, said spokesman Frances Fouts. The purpose of the Camp Fire program is to provide, through informal education, opportunities for youth to realize their potential and to function effectively as caring individuals responsible to themselves and to others, she said. With headquarters in Kansas City, Mo., the organization includes more than 300 local councils serving girls and boys across the country and including youngsters age 6 to 18. Kindergarteners are designated as Sparks; first, second and third graders are Bluebirds; fourth, fifth and sixth graders as Adventurers; of junior high age groups are Discovery; and high school students are Horizon groups. The organization, founded in 1910 as Camp Fire Girls, was expanded in 1975 to include boys.
