There are some of us who, because of a fixed income, costly medical emergency, or severe unemployment problem, need financial assistance. Thats why Mountain Fuel and the Red Cross have initiated REACH, a program that helps truly needy persons meet their financial obligations by providing payments toward their energy costs. And wh'le Mountain Fuel, its customers, and employees have contributed heavily, your donations are urgently needed. (Please be assured they will go directly to needy homes. Not a penny will be spent on administrative costs.) Last year, your generosity assisted over 900 unfortunate households. It was a gesture that can hopefully be duplicated, or exceeded, this year. To donate, simply mark the REACH donation box on your next natural gas bill, and add the specified amount to your payment. Or, send a check directly to the local Red Cross, care of REACH. Ive always been obsessed with the piano, he says, explaining that it is the music as a whole that excites me, not one composer or composition. Each composer draws upon specific emotions and what I enjoy most about performing is the emotional beauty of the music. Vaughan began studying piano on his grandmothers knee at age three. Elsie Starr Vaughan was artist in residence with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and she was his sole instructor until his seventh year. He studied numerous other artists, including Kathleen Keck, professor Mary Johnson, Sister Mildred Dunn O.S.B. (a former student of Nadia Boulanger), and Charlotte Martin, professor of piano at Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Okla. From an early age he began offering formal performances, both in public and privately, throughout Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Colorado. From these recitals he progressed to concert appearances with the Ft. Smith Symphony in 1970 and 1971, the Oklahoma City Symphony in 1972, and the Amarillo Symphony also in 1972. Since relocating to Sandy, Utah in August, 1976, Vaughan has given An several concert, including Evening with Chopin in Symphony Hall in September, 1983, as well as several other major recitals at the Utah Artists Guild and elsewhere. Maintaining a lifelong commitment to his music, he is currently engaged in serious and practice. He hosts a fine repertoire of serious young piano students in his teaching studio in which he has Mark Vaughan offered all levels of instruction since 1981. He is a member of both the Arkansas and Utah chapters of the National Federation of Music Teachers. He is the founder and president of Young Artists in Concert, a nonprofit organization which promotes young performing artists. Vaughan is also musical director of the Desert Strings Performing Ensemble. Some people were bom to do other things and I was born to play the piano, Vaughan says. The flamboyant Robert Lentz, formerly timpanist with the Utah Symphony, will conduct the orchestra. The Murray Symphony is now in its 10th season, and after the January concerts, two other concerts are slated for the season. March 9 features Masterpieces of Love and Romance, while May 11 is The Magic of Broadway, Motion Pictures, and Television. The upcoming concerts are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Jan. 11 and 12, in the Hillcrest junior high school auditorium, 126 E. 5600 South. Tickets are $3.50. Tickets are specifically priced low so that people can bring their friends or their entire family to enjoy the Murray Symphonys performance of the great classics of celebrated composers, says Arlette Day, president of the symphony board.
