Show 4 Thursday, October THE GREEN SHEET 25, 1984 Scared. . That's Why We Pray New Season Brings Message to work has not been adjusted to the prevailing conditions, or whose attentiveness to other vehicles is more fitting for a 3 a.m. drive down a side street on a warm summer night. Last week's storm also delivered another message, one that reminded us all we owe it to our neighbors (and visitors) to clear the walks to help winter ensure their safety. After the 1983-8in its own right - many season - a record-settewill recall that snow removal on streets and walks around the valley ran days, even weeks, behind the desired schedule. Last week's heavy snowfall, while in volume and a unseasonable, record-settinchallenge to even the most ardent lovers of the winter season, should have carried a meaningful message with it for most residents of the Salt Lake Valley. The gist of that message would include such phrases as: be prepared - use extra caution defensively - avoid using the streets when hazardous conditions prevail. The first storm of any winter season is usually a challenge to even the most seasoned driver. In the case of the novice, it can be chaotic, not only to the motorist testing his skills for the first time under wintry conditions, but potentially as chaotic to those other motorists who may be caught by surprise as the untested (or unthinking) driver pits his ability against the hazards posed by ice, snow and slushy street surfaces. The collision of vehicles under adverse conditions is virtually unavoidable, but as many motorists will agree, many accidents they witness are far too often caused by a driver whose equipment is not in the best of shape, whose rush to get The average person ... me included .. . seems bored and unimpressed by the awesome wonders that we see and read of daily. We casually accept, with a so what attitude, occurrences that a generation ago would have shaken people to the very core. Every fall -- r forecasts indicating less of a winter season, residents of the this for challenge valley should make a pledge to see that their doing their part in their own community to clear the snow away. It's encouraging to see that such a spirit already exists, as seen in the efforts residents around the valley have made to clear away broken branches that have strewn yards, streets and sidewalks after breaking under the weight of last week's heavy snowfall. Previous winners have included telephone solicitors, BYU fans (the silent variety), the system that encourages children to grow up too soon and thousands of Idaho voters who cast ballots against changing an old law that, in effect, disenfranchised members of the LDS church. whose professions touch us all in important ways who wont in a lifetime see the dollars some athletes get in a year. But thats not really the issue in this case, because the athletes are getting what the market is bearing. You can't fault them for taking it. that was once the laughing stock of the league caught the attention of fans who shell out more than they can probably afford to support the Jazz. A small core of people who really cared whether the Jazz won or lost grew to a vocal, frenzied collection of near-rabi- d fans. a team Whether Adrian Dantley believes it or not, they won that title without a bonafide superstar. Yes, he led the NBA in scoring, yes, he was an but hes no Larry Bird. Or Julius Erving. He doesnt have the physical tools or the personality to have anywhere near that much of an impact on the game. Hes not the reason fans come to the arena - the Salt Palace or any other. All-Sta- r, -- There were only two candidates this year. Mother Nature and Adrian Dantley. Todays happenings are 'unbelievable, except that we know they really do happen. Our piles of nuclear weapons, our deadly chemical stockpiles, nuclear waste, people on the moon, men and women walking in space and far off space probes all boggle our minds. and yet, Terrific, with all these miracles, what do we talk about? Well, my friends speak of family, work, problems with family, the boss, weather, a new car and such and such. the Utah Jazz has the potential careers of other players. Someone is going to be cut and Dantleys position will have an impact on who it is. Its keeping Frank Layden from making his decision based on the total best interests of the team. When Dantley does come back, there are going to be some fences that have to be mended. Highly-pai- d players holding out until after training camp can't do much for morale. Rich Kelly is no fan favorite, partly for that reason. His play seems to show that he didnt bother to prepare himself for the season. Ill admit to being somewhat of a fair weather fan. I cant afford either in terms of time or dollars to and avid, but to my be way of thinking - and I know its shared by some who are season ticket holders and ardent supporters - trade Dantley now while you can get something in terms of another player or a draft choice. been He is under a legal and valid contract to play basketball for the Jazz, a contract scheduled to expire at the end of this season. He has chosen td withhold his services in an effort to have that contract re- negotiated. Dantley feels that he is worth more money than he's being paid. Welcome to the world, Mr. Dantley. I dont know one human being on the face of this earth who doesnt feel that way. But when one is under contract, withholding of services becomes an ugly issue. The pure and simple fact is that Michele Bartmess The issue is the signed contract. And the example that A. D. is setting for the youngsters who look up to him. In the community, he has had a good reputation as a caring individual who is willing to share some of his resources with underprivileged kids. Hes a gentleman on and off the basketball court. But w hat about the team? Professional basketball isnt as the colperhaps as lege game, but surely even at this level, personality conflicts have an adverse impact. There was something kind of special about the Utah Jazz last season. A division championship for team-oriente- d The most telling thing is that the Jazz have proven they can win without him. There were times in the playoffs that his style of play seemed to hinder the team. His holdout also has an impact on -- If, indeed, anyone wants him. We werent bored when men walked on the moon and we werent bored when the nuclear power plant on Three Mile Island had to be closed, either. We didnt know what had happened, but we knew that something new and cataclysmic had happened and might change our world. Yeah, we werent bored then. But we are so staggered with new things every day, each one more awe inspiring than the last, that our imagination refuses to respond any more. The projects and events afe far beyond our control and our opinions are neither wanted nor needed. world-shakin- d One would think after Thursdays gift of not only the worst winter storm ever to hit this valley, but also one of the earliest, M. N. would win hands down. But after careful consideration of all of the emotional aspects of the award, I decided to give it to A.D. Dantleys contract situation with for centuries upon centuries. 4 Bartmess Barb: A.D. Wins Hands Down November - I award the Bartmess Barb, and although its a week early, the time has come. We do our daily chores, fix meals, shop, go to church, care for our neighbors and family and, when day is done, say our prayers and go to bed. We do the simple things people have spoken about and done Ethel Bradford So what is the matter with us? Are we too stupid to know what's going on out there? Dont we know what miracles we are witnessing? Well, yes, we do. We know full well of the horrors that even the baby bomb over Hiroshima caused, and we also know the tragedy of the fall-oover our southern counties. We wonder about flying saucers and watch with ut respect our ventures into space. And for someone who even needs a road map to get around the county, and whose talent in taking pictures stops at the point of keeping my thumb out of the way, well, the pictures weve seen from outer space blow my mind. I have my own pet theory of why we are so blase and detached about these wondrous events. We hear, see, and believe such things but we do not understand them. They are so far removed from the scope of our daily lives that, inasmuch as we cannot comprehend, we . . . what else ? ? ? go along as if nothing had happened. We have lost control over that part of our lives and the only way to live with that loss of control is to forget and pretend it never has happened. To go on living exactly as before. We have no way of knowing whether the men and brains behind those events are good and wise or if theyre foolish, evil and greedy. So, we go on, leading our uneventful lives, doing the best we can each day and then saying our prayers each night. Yes, we say our prayers with the j assurance that men may be evil and i foolish, but that God is neither. That He most certainly knows of our bombs, space probes, flying- saucers, chemical stock piles, and i the other chaos in the world, but that.' He also knows that the most import tant marvel remains people. Adults or children, Blacks, browns or" whites. Russian, Chinese, African or j Israeli. Its people, human beings,',1 who matter, not things. No mattej v how miraculous those thing are. ' ' No, we aren't blase about the worlds happenings ... far from it. The truth is, we're scared. And thats why we say our prayers each night, and hope others all over the world are doing the same. JCettm Dear editor Proposition No. 3, the Judicial Article, must be defeated.
