Setterberg has elected commander of American Legion District 8, with Shirley Meier elected auxiliary president Setterberg, a Vietnam veteran, has been a Legionnaire since he was discharged from the Army in 1970. He served in Vietnam for a year with the 1st 69th Armored Cavalry. He has served as first vice commander and second vice commander in the district and as commander of his post where he is presently adjutant He has also been Boys State chairman Americanism chairman. VOLUNTEERS is presently serving his second year as chairman of the Utah Sons of the American Legion, after reactivating the Post SAL unit He was active m the SAL group for many years in various offices before joining the American Legion Serving with him are Grant volunteer office duties. Fay Clara and Orlando Donate Countless Hours the emergency In many respects, Fay and Keith Yeates, Orlando and Clara Barber are typical of the many volunteers who donate thousands of hours annually to help others. But in this instance they are unique, because not only are the husband and wife duos interested in the same type of community service they also have a lot of togetherness. Collectively they have given 12,167 hours of their free time to make life a little brighter for disabled American veterans who are confined at Veterans hospital. Individually Mr. Barber has donated almost half of that total with 5,000 hours devoted to hospital patients in a seven year span Mrs Yeates is the volunteer with the longest tenure, having spent 14 years working in a variety of capacities Today she works in the volunteer office assisting Steven Gish, chief of volunteers, by recording hours the volunteers serve and helping mail information to different organizations that participate m the medical center program She also works as a file clerk, and has 3,167 hours to her credit Her husband has been involved in the program over the past five years, working in Red Carpet, a department that received its name from the blood they transport from secretary-treasure- s, r, i 4x4x8 I 2x4x8 I 1 x4x6 ALL KINDS All FREE ESTIMATE room to the laboratory. He also aids patients m finding the clinic they need to go to and picks up records from the record room for the various clinics In addition he picks from the y room and up in his spare time serves coffee, punch and cookies to those waiting in the emergency and admitting His total hours number 2,500 Mr. Barber works with Rev. Thomas Meersman m the mornings assisting with mass and visiting patients For two hours m the afternoon he opens the recreation hall and serves coffee and cookies From time to time he has taken patients fishing to help relieve the monotony of hospital life A relative newcomer, Mrs Barber has been working at the hospital only since she retired two years ago So far she has donated 1,500 hours, working in the nuclear medicine branch of the hospital where she takes care of the files Und handles the copying machine All four are members of the Copper DAV chapter and auxiliary and all agree that the work they do is interesting and stimulating One night a month they help serve dinner and play games with some of the patients that are bused from the medical center to the DAV Home at 1380 So West Temple They stressed that these nights are very important (See Page 5B, Col. 3) oli S Aluminum Siding, Soffit, fascia A Guttering Colon - EXPERT t INSTALLATION VERL ASAV INDUSTRIES "30 Verl V - CALL 968-324- 7 or Joe - - 966-839- 1x6x6 LaCon-cierg- e during the coming year. She held several chairmanships in the state auxiliary, was education chairman and is currently second chairman on the committee for Veterans hospital She has been a volunteer at the VA medical center Wednesday night dances and helped with the annual gift shop. Each year she helps decorate the halls at the medical center, and on Christmas morning Mrs. Meier and her family visit veterans at the center with gifts. She is currently on the constitution and bylaws committee of Dept. Mrs. Meier has been appointed transportation chairman for the national convention of the American Legion and Auxiliary to be held Aug 27 through Sept. 5 in Salt Lake, as well as transportation chairman for convention the the national 0 8-- same week. She and her husband have seven children and seven grandchildren and have resided in Murray the last 25 years. Mrs. Meier has been active in the auxiliary the past ten years. She signed up under her husband, Dana, who has been a member of Post 71 for 30 years.
