When all was said and done Tuesday night, too much had been said, and Cyprus came out on the short end of a 1 score of a game it seemingly had won. Tomorrow (Friday) the Pirates will host Olympus, while Granger travels to Skyline. The Bucs couldnt overcome a fifth technical foul after shaking off the effects of four earlier violations in an ineptly officiated contest that hurt both teams down the stretch. Pirate faithful said the final technical should have been preceded by one on the Lancers. Grangers Jeff Willardson cut a three-poilead to one on a drive to the basket with six seconds left. As Pirate Corey Gust moved to take the ball out of bounds, Grangers Mike Wilding slapped the ball out of his hands. Buc coaches gave the T sign, asking for a technical. Gust interpreted that as a request for a time out - a time out that Cyprus did not have coming. Cyprus was assessed a two-shtechnical and Willardson canned both to give the Lancers a edge. On the ensuing inbounds play, Wilding was fouled and made two shots to insure the victory. Pirate Coach Mark Wilson, who admitted his team made some the morning after a game in Ive earned a technical. I dont feel like one today. Im mad, and I feel bad for my kids that a game they had won was taken away from them. I never make the officials the scapegoat, but this time, they will. Wilson has protested the game. Two Pirates were also assessed technical fouls, and another was called because a player had allegedly failed to report, although moments before being called for a personal and being assessed the he had scored a three-poiT, fool which 54-5- nt play. Had Granger lost, Coach Scott Iverson would have had some legitimate beefs as well. After Wilson was called for his technical, the Lancers were victimized by several of what looked like make-u- p calls. The Pirates lost one basket on a controversial call, but were still able to fight back from a deficit late in the third period to take the lead with 1:50 left in the game. Some missed charity tosses let Granger stay alive and the Lancers finally convt-te- d the big break into the victory. d It was not a game, but overshadowed by the controversy, was a superb defensive effort by the Lancers that totally disrupted the Cyprus inside game. Cyprus was able to manage a sum total of eight points from its talented front line, and only the play of Gust and Brian Breinholt and some solid bench performances, especially by Kelly Goodfellow, put the Pirates in position to win. The Lancers simply denied the inside shot, while they were able to find seams in a Pirate box and one and his status for the Lancer test of Skyline is questionable. Cyprus led 1 after one period, but a late T in the first half helped Granger to a 2 half-tim- e edge. It was 7 going into the last eight minutes. Turnovers played a big role, with both teams having close to two dozen. Granger had only 13 buckets, but cashed in from the line with 28x40, while Cyprus shot 57 percent from the field, 20x34, but went 11x21 from the line. Willardson led all scorers with 25 (5,15x20). Jeff Condie added nine. Willardson also hauled down a dozen rebounds. Gust scored 20 for the Bucs (9, 2x3) and Breinholt eight, a total matched by Goodfellow. designed to contain Manual Fabela.
