Schmidt went on to earn accolades while lettering three years at the University of Utah as an interior lineman. He graduated in 1964 and added a masters degree in 69. After four years as a Granger high assistant, he took over the reins at Skyline high, where he posted a 1 record of and captured five state championships. He moved on to Ricks College in 1980 and in two campaigns chalked up a 17-- 3 record, copping the 1981 Valley of the Sun Bowl game in Phoenix. The results of Schmidts coaching at the Y arent as visible as those of the offensive squad, which the acknowledges. He comments, I dont think one phase of the game is more important than ofanother. We have a fense here and people enjoy that. Theyre more in the limelight, but that doesnt bother me. Weve got a that satisfies me. The team has to win; the key to winning is teamwork. I think we have the team concept here. Reynolds followed his collegiate career at BYU by playing with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL until a recurring knee injury forced him to give up the game. He then moved on to coach at both Ricks and its archrival, Snow College. COURT have gotten the win. After trailing the entire game, Kearns cut the lead to three with two minutes left in the contest. The Cougars fouled Manual Fabela, sending him to the line with a Fabela missed the front end of the bonus and Kearns apparently snared the rebound, but a Cougar moved into the lane early and gave Fabela another chance. This time he sank both and the Lancers were up to stay. Although they began sluggishly, the Cougars put up a fight before losing by the final margin of five. The Lancers jumped out to a 13-- 2 lead, but Kearns gained a bucket on them, ending the initial quarter down 17-Keams cut that margin to seven before the half, trailing 2 going into the locker room. By the end of the third quarter, the Lancers had built the lead back up to 2 10, with a edge, but Kearns made its move in the fourth quarter. Granger got into foul trouble and the momentum swung in favor of the Cougars. With their opponent whittling away at the lead, the Lancers slowed the game down, spreading n out to draw Kearns into a defense. Jt looked as if Kearns might be able to take the lead with the momentum that - had been generated, but Fabelas second chance on lane violation gave the Lancers the needed push to secure the win. Kearns Coach Kenyon Clark said he was a little frustrated about his teams missed shot, particularly underneath the basket. We had at least 15 shots that we missed underneath off offensive rebounds, Clark said. They just wouldnt go down. The Cougars outrebounded their but Clark said that opponents figure can be misleading since they got so many second shots. Granger hit 12x34 for 35 percent from the field and 26x33 for 79 percent from the line. Kearns converted on 18x60 for 30 percent from the floor while hitting 9x19 for 47 percent in foul shooting. For Granger, Jeff Condie led the team with 13 points and eight rebounds, followed by Jeff Willardson with 12 points, Fabela with nine points and six assists.
