Cyprus and Olympus field at Copper found a semi-dr- y Community park Tuesday, but the Pirate bats were frozen solid by a standout pitching performance. Titan Val Sunberg rode his teammates offense to a victory in the Region Three encounter. For the Pirates, that came on the heels of a 14-- pasting by Granite in the league opener last Wednesday, pointing up some weaknesses in the Buc mound corps, at least in the ear12-- 1 7 ly going. Cyprus will try to rebound tomorrow (Friday), at Cottonwood, while Olympus hosts Skyline and Granite meets Granger. On Tuesday the Bucs will visit Skyline, Granger is at Oly and Granite at Cottonwood. Granite started off with a bang, scoring five runs in the first inning, touching Cyprus starter Grant Huish ior several walks and some key hits. That brought on Brian Densley, who pitched pretty well until he tired in the fifth and was replaced by Huish, who later gave way to Roland Marquez. The Farmers built their lead with a pair of runs in the third and one in the fourth, while the Pirates pushed a run home in the fourth and then 1 8-- 6 advantage of several Farmer errors and a tiring Randy Bown in took the top of the fifth, scoring five runs. Larry Buhler came on to put out the fire and in the bottom of the inning, Granite put the game back out of reach with four more runs and cap ped off the game with two more in the sixth. The Farmers had eight hits, while Cyprus was limited to six. Cyprus played errorless ball in the field and had a circus catch by Dave Inskeep in left, but made several mental errors running the bases that took them out of potential scoring situations in the early frames. Rex Watson was among several Farmers who managed to get on base by hook or by crook, enabling Granite to hold the Pirates at bay. Oly 12, Cyprus 1 Greg Browns stickwork and a solid pitching performance by Val Sundberg sparked a decisive 12-- 1 Olympus victory over Cyprus on Tuesday. Browns performance included a homer, two singles and five RBIs, while Sundberg allowd only three hits, striking out four and walking one.
