Show 4 a Thursday, Aug. WEST VALLEY VICW will a 12, 1982 From Former Magna Council Leader - There are a lot of things theyre doHowever, ing a great job on. MacBeth said the older Magna areas have not had to face many of the issues which confront the Lake Ridge area. High growth in the area has given the east side residents a new set of problems, MacBeth said. The Magna Council is doing a good job in their own sphere with the issues theyve chosen. Another Lake Ridge Council proponent, Kent Goble, agrees with this analysis. The Magna Council deals with issues based on its own commitments, he said. Our con- cerns are not necessarily their concerns as far as priorities are involved. I know that they are aware of some of our problems, Goble but they have priorities. said, Goble said he feels that the new council can work more closely on a neighborhood level. The Lake Ridge Council has no intention of addressing Magnawide problems at this time, according to Goble. He said he realizes the Magna Council could see the new group as a threat to their autonomy, but that is not the intention. We dont want to get in an adversary relationship with the council. The two groups should be Council Slates Talk Based On Opinion TAYLORSVILLE. The council currently consists of four committees designed to address different needs in creating a permanent council. The four committees are districts, issues and public relations. None of the members are permanent, Goble said. We want no special interests on the council. This will be a very representative council. If any of the former members of the council want a position on it, they will have to run and be elected like anyone else, Goble said. It will be a purely elective council, with three representatives from each district, he said. The formation of the new council is the general mood in the country, according to Goble. When neighborhoods have concerns, they should get together and talk about it. Its the trend, he said, to get as localized as possible. The written opinion was promised (within 10 days) by County Commissioner Mike Stewart at a meeting of the council on Aug. 3. The council had complained that six weeks wasnt enough time to spread results of a feasibility study geared for release in Thus far, the commission has only speculated that the election might be held along with able to work in cooperation with each other, Goble said. Mrs. Pehrson said she does not understand why the Lake Ridge residents do not go through the proper channels. The new council had plenty of opportunity to become a part of the Magna Council when we had our elections, she said. Instead, they chose to work outside of the council for their own special interests. MacBeth claims that the Magna Council has not been very visible to residents on the east side, that many residents do not know when elections are or who their representatives are. They havent reached out to us at all, MacBeth contends. Theyre kind of invisible. I dont even know who my representative is. Mrs. Pehrson claims that that is not so. She said elections for council members have been well announced and that most people in the Lake Ridge area should know who their representative is. Of the 23 members on the Magna Council, eight are from the Lake Ridge area, which should be adequate representation, Mrs. Pehrson said. But, according to Goble, the Lake Ridge area has about 60 percent of the population of Magna Mon- day. The change is being made to make maximum use of a reduction in staff over the last two years as a result of budget tightening, officials explained. Hours will be Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. SUMMARY Lake Ridge Council Draws Criticism MAGNA. The formation of a new community council on the east side of this community has' drawn fire from the existing Magna Community Council. The new organization, the Lake Ridge Community Council, was created to look after the communitys needs, according to Dave MacBeth, one of the organizers. The area includes several subdivisions in Magna from about 7200 West to 8400 West. The council was formed Aug. 3, which MacBeth announced at a recent meeting of the Salt Lake County Assn, of Community Councils. LaRee Pehrson, a member of the Magna Council, opposes the new group, stating, I think the Magna Community Council should take an aggressive stand against the Lake Ridge Council. I feel like they are dividing the community right up the middle. She said they do not even want to associate with the west side. Theyre only going to represent the more affluent community, which, in my mind, is a sick situation, Mrs. Pehrson said. MacBeth said it is true the new council will represent only the Lake Ridge community. Were not trying to replace them (the Magna Community Council). open one hour later beginning THE WEATHER of Redwood Road Croat prfaM nd friendly eervlce for over 90 yeere. s |
