Unceasing Energy by Mark Arner After watching SALT LAKE. what Joe Hardy does to those Damn Yankees, youre liable to feel good enough for the pearly gates. Which is a roundabout way of saying that after watching the musical now being performed at Pioneer Memorial Theatre about love, baseball and lady journalists, youll feel like youre in heaven. The play is scheduled to run an extra week through June 5 on Lees Main Stage, with performances at 8 oclock nightly, except Sundays and a May 29 matinee at 2 p.m. And, you dont have to know anything about baseball to relate to the plot. Its simply an American look at the Dream and the wives that have to put up with the daydreamers. Oh, and the devil gets kicked around a bit too. If I were to give gold stars for outstanding performances, Id give the brightest to Sandy Roveta who portrayed Lola - a seductive hussy who tried everything from strip tease to sweet nothings to get the hero to fall for her. Frankly though, in her case, I wasnt easy to impress. Beginning with her introduction as the best on the devils homewrecker staff, I kept thinking to myself that energy-packe- madrigals directed by Morris Lee and a duet with guitar accompaniment by Patricia Stout and Kim Barlow singing Tomorrow and Yesterday. Stakes involved are eyeballs, she commands the audiences undivided attention. And, as she lilts through Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets, although she missed the hero, she won my heart. Keith Engars portrayal of Applegate (the devil in a suitcoat) is another bright spot. From the moment that he appears to purchase old Joes soul and proves his identity by effortlessly lighting a to his moaning about being swindled by an escape clause, Engar is a perfect mixture of charming and naughty. Although it seemed his role was a bit hyped up with a solo before the last scene, its not every day that you see an executive producer of a theater and Dean of Fine Arts give such an enjoyable performance. Padded PMT veteran Robert Peterson was less than convincing, however, in his portrayal of devout baseball fan Joe Boyd. Granted, his part is difficult because he must introduce the audience to the plot, but he doesnt really come across as a sports junkie. Perhaps he could have inhaled a couple of beers and munched on some pretzels. And, he could have been more effective by being less ready to erupt into song. Choreographer Jayne Luke obviously put some care into her PMT debut as a choreographer. From the Joe Hardy Fan club duet by Ms. Roveta and Wayne Moon, to the nightclub scene centered around Ms. Roveta and John Hansen, the movements were lively, the timing precise and everyone was right on the music. Winkie Tedesco Horman was always loveable as an always spunky sister. She was particularly vibrant when she went to testify in court and pushed aside a guard, saying, Get your hands off me you . . . Republican! Both she and her daughter Green Sheet Michelle, a Award Arts winner, Performing combine talents to add to the shows success. Karen Alston was convincing as a muckraking lady journalist. H.E.D. Redford deserved a coach of the year award for his delivery of the comment, Hes costin the club money, as Joe Hardy belts his 20th homer out of the park. Finally Marsha Miller was a caring wife, John Hansen played a solid Joe Hardy and Robert Baker deserves a wad of chew for his colorful portrayal of Smokey the catcher. A petition for annexation of part of Granite Park to South Salt Lake is scheduled for consideration here next week. About 675 property owners have signed the petition, according to Brent Metcalf, spokesman for residents in the area between 300 and 700 East, between 3300 and 3900 South. The area has a population of about 1,295. The largely residential area has within it, relatively few businesses, along with Granite high, Granite Park junior high, Lincoln elementary, Hartvigsen school and main offices of the Granite School District, as well as headquarters of the County Recreation Department. Alluding to considerable talk this spring that annexation raids would rob the unincorporated area of tax base, Metcalf said, Were certainly not raiding any tax base in our area; its overwhelmingly residential. Mayor Jim Davis noted that the annexation proposal is a scaled down version of one that started about two years ago, extending at that time all the way west to the Jordan River. two-tim- e Were convinced that a majority of the residents in that area are Thrifty shoppers read the Green Sheet classifieds!
