Show VTT" ' T Magna Council Hears Report & Park Development Funds Lacking Future development of Magna parks looked grim last week, according to reports Thursday at the Magna Community Council meeting. Joe Ribotto, reporting on Community Development funds, said that six or seven million dollars worth of proposals had come before the steering committee which had only two million dollars to distribute. As a result, 16 proposals had been recommended to receive the funds, with only one being from the Magna area. Ribotto said that parks and recreations had recommended that no parks be funded this year and consequently, there were no funds allocated for Magna because they had asked for improvements at both the Pleasant Green and Copper parks. However, Magna did get the full amount requested for curb and gutter in the west side of town where flooding has occurred due to irrigation water. Ribotto said the had indicated it took this stand against parks to bring to the countys attention that the Parks and Recreation Department was not responsive to the wishes of the people in planning. To reinforce that statement, Ralph Brimley, council president, said the Western Baseball League, which draws boys from between the Jordan River and the Oquirrhs and from 3500 to 2100 South, had wanted to develop an area of Pleas MAGNA. ant Green park for its use. They were ready to spend $80,000 to put in backstops, bases, pitchers mounds, etc. and provide all the labor, he said. The only condition they wanted was to play ball Monday through Friday from 6 p m. on, keeping in line with county regulations, but the county said no. This says to me that they are unresponsive to our needs, Brim-leadded. Brimley went on to say that the council has had the park since 1969 and all that has been accomplished with the CD Funds that have been allocated is the planting of of the area in grass. Although funds for a restroom have been released, so far none has been built and parking is needed to y one-four- th Saflevjisiy eliminate congestion in neighborhoods adjacent to the park and traffic hazards on 8400 West. In citing the need for parking, Chick Paris said that if the county was going to give a business license it would first require adequate parking. Yet at Pleasant Green park, a safety problem is being created by forcing people to park on the street. To further emphasize problems that exist near the site, Mr. and Mrs. George Vosnos told the council that they would be willing to forego a restroom if the money could be spent on a parking facility that would allow them to have access to their driveway once more. The couple also complained about the problems of irrigation Com, P o' Cut or French Style Green Beans, Peas Cream Style or Whole Kernel Corn 4 S', 1 s Thursday, May TTUHUUV.Tr W 13, 1982 waste water that pools in the area, creating a breeding ground for mosquitoes. In other business before the council, Paris reported on the proposed Incorporation with Kenne-coCopper. He said that a petition and map had been taken into the company offices and officials seemed to be in favor of the proposal. However, two weeks later, KCC officials said they didnt want to take a stand before the Lake Valley City election. The only thing Im concerned about is the fact that KCC Is now negotiating to buy all the land west of the highway all the way from Magna to Copperton, Pans said, and I am worried about the fact that they will be building a new concentrator below Copperton and where will the tailings be dump- sioners, stating that under no circumstances should the ground between Magna and Copperton be rezoned to permit such an installation. In reporting on the school district, Brimley said the district is considering floating a bond to build a high school and junior high school, as well as acquiring funds for maintenance and repairs in existing facilities. However, for the time being the district has opted for relocatables and formed a committee to look into busing students to the east side schools, intending to wait until September to decide whether to go for a bond. Brimley also said that the new addition to Cyprus high would be a bare bones facility, with basically the same facilities that are now being used.
