Nancy was notified in The young Hunter housewife then had to fill out information for her biography, answer many questions on how and why she cooks, which cookbooks she uses and what influences the way she cooks. I agreed that Pillsbury would be sole owner of my entry, that they had the right to edit it, adapt it, even change the name, if they chose. that shed been selected, the very last day of notification for the 30th annual affair. However, they kept the same name - Peanut Butter Scotch Piec- but they did es change the procedure slightly and cut down on the amount of peanut butter glaze that is drizzled over the top of my bar cookies. The trip to San Antonio on Feb. 6 was exciting, all paid for by Pillsbury as part of the reward for being a finalist. My husband accompanied me - by paying his own way, she continued. The bakeoff was held in the big -- Convention Center, right across from the Hilton Hotel where we stayed. My husband had to remain in the visitors area while I was doing the baking The baking area was only for the contestants plus some food editors, trade people and media personnel. We had staff people there too, but only to help us, getting ingredients or taking care of the dirty dishes. We had an opportunity to bake our recipe three different times We had from 8 a m. to 2 pm to complete our entry. I took mine to the didnt even place, though. s Eleven were competing, the teen-ager- over melted butter- scotch pieces. Cool completely. Cut into bars. the Saints Go Marching In. Ill never forget it. There was and a a brother-siste- r couple of mothers and daughters The youngest contestant was a girl. Mrs. Gunn said she was one of two contes-- . tants from Utah. The other was Wendy Ruffi-ni- , a student from BYU. I think I had the most children of any of the finalists, she commented. Many were surprised that I was the mother of six since they said I looked young. I made quite a few friends there. Im surprised how close some of us became in so short a period. They want me to write and to send pictures of my children She aid that 23 of the 100 finalists were from California, that 30 states had finalists. Th is is the first time many years that they ve had finalists in from Utah. The day of the bakeoff w as extremely cold, so cold in fact, that they had to wear coats. DeVorl, her husband, had a new blue ski parka that was stolen while he was at the Convention Center. Pillsbury is replacing it, "How good it is," is for the national bake-of- f what Nancy Gunn seems to be saying about her cookies which took her to Texas contest. She still likes them after making dozens of times. (OsiIkesdDiiD IFIloiran Martha L.
