Less than eight weeks remain for candidates to file for the Lake Valley City election. Approval of Lake Valley City on May 11 would form about 200 square miles of the unincorporated Salt Lake County encompassing 92.3 percent of the areas population into a city of the first class. Deadlines for office seekers is April 19, and voters must register by April 20, according to County Election Clerk Kay Llewellyn. At presstime (Wednesday), although several petitions naming candidates were being circulated, no candidates had filed. Before an individual can register as a candidate, Mrs. Llewellyn said, state law requires that 300 signatures be submitted on a petition naming the person as a candidate. The signatures must be gained from the total area in a mayors case and from the specific district area in the case of a councilman. Only residents within the Lake Valley City proposal area are eligible to run for office, vote or sign petitions, Mrs. Llewellyn noted. Mail-iregistration forms for voters may be picked up at banks, n libraries and post offices in the unincorporated county, she said. Otherwise, individuals may register personally at the County Election office, 2102 W. 2300 South, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Petitions for candidates may be submitted to either the County Election Division or to the County Commission, 400 So. State, room 407, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Deputy County Attorney Gavin Anderson pointed out the proper wording for petitions.
