Cyprus high boys will chase their eighth straight swimming crown here tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday, while Cottonwoods girls will be after three in a row. The Pirates are expected to have little trouble moving into the 4A ranks and if all goes as indicated on paper, the battle for second place will be the close one defending 4A champ Brighton and Skyline. Cottonwoods quest for girls honors will be a little more difficult this year, most observers feel, with Brighton presenting a very real threat and Skyline also having a say in the outcome of the team races. Several Green Sheet area individuals are seeded number one going into the meet and can be expected to bring home gold medals. Action gets under way tomorrow at the UofU Natatorium with heats in events followed at 11:30 by diving competition where area athletes are expected to do well. The finals in the first four events are scheduled at 7 tomorrow. On will Saturday heats in events be staged at 9 30, with finals at 7. 1 : Cottonwoods girls team literally ran away with the Region Three meet with 566 points. Runnerup Skyline scored 404 and Cyprus 256. The Pirate boys won their meet with 411. Skyline scored 366 and Granger 284. In Region Two, Brighton grabbed both boys and girls honors. Going into the state meet, Skylines girls are the top seed In the medley relay, with Cottonwood a very close second. The Cyprus boys team appears to be a solid favorite in that event. Cottonwood is seeded fourth; Skyline second. Kearns highs Karen Stowell is the favorite in the 200 free, with Cottonwoods Stacey DeGooyer the second seed. Bonnevilles Kip is Twitchell, last years runner-up- , favored this year in the 200. Seeded third, fourth and sixth are Ron Richards and Marty Steckler of Cyprus and Grangers Adam Garside. Cyprus sophomore Peter Wetterhall should pick up one of two individual gold medals in the boys IM. Teammate Todd Richards is seeded third. In the girls event, Easts Joni Young is the top seed, with Cottonwoods Patti Poesch seeded second and But South Nips Judge Granger Nips Colts Stella Tall of Kearns fifth. In the 50 free, Meredith Tinnin of Kearns and Shirleen Hancock are seeded right behind Skylines Sid Leeper. Bountifuls Craig Quinn has the top male time going in, with Cottonwoods Erik Erickson seeded third, where he finished a year ago. Wetterhall is the top seed in the 100 butterfly, as is Easts Young in the girls event. Cottonwoods Lynn Wayman and Todd Ostergaard figure to be in the boys finals, while DeGooyer carries Colt hopes as the second seed among the girls. Stowell could become a double winner for Kearns as the top seed in the 100 free. Kathy Talbot of Cottonwood is listed fourth. Bountifuls Quinn carries the best boys time, with Garside seeded fifth for Granger and Scott Hancock sixth for the Pirates. Steckler is the top boys seed in the 500, with teammate Ron Richards fourth and Brett Ormsby of Cottonwood listed fifth. In the girls event, Roys Karen Shazolt is the top seed, with Mary Wilson of Cottonwood and Sarah Sadler of Cyprus seeded fifth and sixth. Grangers Cindy Webb is the favorite in the back, followed by Tosses Seal Victory Talbot.of Cottonwood and Hancock of Cyprus. In the boys race, Nick Glazener of Brighton is in a class by himself and Region Three champ Dave Moreton of Olympus is not among the top six. Todd Richards should win the 100 breast, with Kelly Richards of Cottonwood and Mike Ayers of Cottonwood also expected to be finalists. Poesch should win that event for the Cottonwood girls, while Tinnin and Tall of Kearns are listed among the top six. Skyline is the favorite in the girls freestyle relay, with Cyprus seeded second and Cottonwood fourth, while among the boys, the Pirates should seal their title in the meet finale with Cottonwood seeded second, Olympus fourth and Granite fifth.
